More trouble, engine woes.

Postby Uncle B » Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:30 am

Hi guys,

Haven't been on for a while as my motor has been getting fixed/overhauled.
I find if I don't come on here I don't miss it as much!

I posted ages ago about needing tappet retainer clips and got sorted, I also got some nice Creative headers and blueflame downpipes to complement the new decat.

A set of complete engine gaskets were also bought seeing as the engine was getting stripped anyway.

Anyway, on further stripping, the engine was essentially diagnosed as FUBAR'd today.
Ticked over fine when cold a few days ago but today when tested it died. Something about losing compression and some other stuff I didn't quite understand...
I've been without the car for months and was all ready to get it back this weekend so I'm pretty devastated tbh.

I'm not 100% sure what exactly I need so there may be some hope that I'll be able to raid Wildhound/Diligoats engine that they're breaking but from what I've heard it sounds like it may well need a complete overhaul.

I'll post tomorrow when I'm more certain so I guess I just wanted to let it out/rant a little bit/dig for sympathy :smt002

Shouldnt the company youve been getting the work done through be partially responsible for that. I would have thought that sort of thing should have been assessed/checked before any work commenced?

A mech that charges you nothing for labour is even harder to find!

He's a good friend and I don't think he's in anyway to blame for it, I was told that it (the engine) was looking rough before hand so I knew it was starting to deteriorate anyway, I was just hoping I'd get a bit more out of it.

You're right though, if I went through a company I'd be looking for something out of them.

Top end is gone apparently.

I'm trying to source another engine atm.

then just check and see which cylinder is low on compression. then remove which head it is,check valves and get head pressure tested.or just replace the engine but u dont know whats wrong with it then. :!:iv just spent more on my engine then an 2nd engine would have been, but i know what work is done now.

My 2 cents worth.
Dont bother wasting time and money on repairing an engine like this DIY. Either get it to a professional or (What I would do) source a replacement unit.
Are we talking mivec or non mivec here?
Any enigne you buy make sure to replace the T-belt, pump and plugs.

Thanks for the replies guys, all valid points.

I've already went with Rorys idea (the second one) and should be picking up shelliers spare engine (Mivec btw Ror) on sunday all things going well.

The original engine has ~203k km on it, I replaced the Water pump (187k km) and T-belt (192k) so I'll be using those as well as all the brand new engine gaskets I've bought. I'll get some new plugs though, thanks for that.

The replacement has 107k km on it (unless its been clocked, not that I think it has been or anything) so hopefully will last another 100k km!

I do see where you're coming from though Danny, no one knows what the engine has gone through or how long it'll last.
