PS3 and Imported games

I know there's a few PS3 owners on here... I was just wondering if any of yous have tried US games on it..
I've read somewhere that the games apparently are region free - but the blueray movies aren't.. I'm somewhat surprised then to note that an American Copy of "Need For Speed Carbon" has the "Region 1" branding on it similar to a regular DVD..
