In December 1969, the first generation Colt (Later changed to Mitsubishi Motors)  Galant was launched. Now in its ninth generation the original model was offered as a four door saloon, with a hardtop coupe version available in 1970, and the Galant FTO in 1971.
Designed in Colt's then fashionable aerodynamic " Dynawedge" style, the Galant hardtop was the first Japanese car to have side windows without central pillars - a feature shared with the Galant FTO which was launched a year later.
The name Galant is derived from the word Gallant meaning" smartly or boldly stylish" The letters FTO stand for "Fresh Touring Origination"
Power came from a choice of three engines. Starting off the range was a 1.4 litre 4 cylinder Saturn 4G41 engine producing 72bhp (remarkable when you bear in mind that a Mark 5 Golf engine of the same capacity had the same output), power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual gearbox, When you consider the 825kg kerbweight 72bhp goes a long way. The 1.4 engine was later replaced with a pair of 1.6 litre Saturn 4G32 engines developing 84 and 91 bhp.
The Galant FTO ended production in 1974.

Nice write up.

I had actually tried searching for it, but for some reason the search wont let you enter any words with 3 or less letters in, which is annoying. ( i tried searching Fto Gpx Tip before and got nothing back )
