GR or GPX?

Postby declanc » Fri Jan 07, 2005 6:50 pm

Im planning on buying an FTO within the next few months and was wondering if some of you's could help me make up my mind.

Apart from the Mivec in the GPX are there any other advantages in owning one over the GR? (without causing any arguments!!)
I've had a few Mits Colts / Lancer 1.3ltr and I found that they were pretty heavy on the juice (without been driven hard) what are the FTO's like on petrol? Am I better off buying the GPX because of the Mivec??

Any help would be great!

Have owned both GR Tip and GPX Manual - both good cars but the GPX manual has quite a noticeable step up in performance - there nothing in it as regards economy - I average about 23-26mpg - don't buy an FTO if ecomony is an issue - but its certainly a lot more economical than a scooby etc.

As CJ mentioned in another post - a clean GR will always be a better option than a poor GPX - however a GPX manual will always be easier to sell on and should hold its value better than a GR.

You should also budget for the typical worn parts on a 95/96 FTO - the front and rear droplinks / ARB bushes etc - if it hasn't had the belts changed then you'll probably also need to buy Alt, Power Steering and Cambelt. All parts are reasonable value and can be had from a variety of sources if you know where to look.

Never heard of one - What year did that model appear?

How is that project going? Are you going to have it together in time for the rollers? - I'd imagine you're finding out there is a fair bit of work to getting it set-up right.

ah it's coming together, everything more or less fits, just in the process of getting the piping sorted along with a couple of hoses and elbows coming in from demon tweeks, that and a couple of bits coming in from camskill, we reckon one more long weekend at her and she should be ready, the electrics are going to be the tricky part but we've got an auto electrician willing to give us a hand for a couple of pints!

Iv'e just being talking to a guy who imports cars from Japan and said that I would get a 1.8 vtec Integra on my door for around 6 grand if I imported it myself, there going in the buy and sell for 12/13k. Although the Integra is a quality car, I'd prefer the FTO!

Does the GR come with folding mirrors?

Sounds like there could be a few quid to be made there!! I've never driven an Integra, but on looks FTO is easily the nicer car IMO.

Yup, the GR comes with folding mirrors alright.

Very much doubt that this 1.8 Integra would be a Type R version for 6K.
98 Type R's are making 12/13K in Ireland but so would a 98 FTO GPX.
Standard 98 1.8 Integras wouldn't sell for any more than 9-10K but a Type R it certainly is not.

Having driven both - I know what I'd prefer - Type R is a fast car but not any quicker than a Manual GPX and the GPX is a far better looking car - much better image too. My mechanic has a Type R ( & a Scooby WRX) and had my Manual GPX for a day recently and was very surprised by the FTO performance - better sounding - every bit as quick and similar handling levels. A well looked after example of a GPX Mivec has little to fear from the vast majority of hot hatches.

IMO - there is no better value performance car for 8K than a clean 95 Manual GPX. Great performance and looks for the money.

If you can get a 98 Type R for 6K then you won't loose - but I'd imagine the best you can hope for this money is a standard 1.8 Integra as per this link :-

The GPX came fitted with folding mirrors from the factory but they were an option on the GR, 50% of all GRs I've seen have 'em mind you.

Declan, folding mirrors should be the last of your worries, get out and drive a couple of FTO's man! ;)

Teg R's are nice cars, they're stripped out and generally have a low interior spec though. The Teg has better gearing ratios than the GPX so theres not going to be much in it. Both handle excellently but I'd tend to be biased towards the GPX on that front. From what I've read, the Teg is not a great car about town, the standard clutch is supposed to be quite harsh. In terms of looks, the FTO has so much more road presence and is way better value, you get a lot more car for your money.
