Richard batty has a vr4 engine dropped into his, it will cost more than 3k all in to do, be nearer 5k alot of work needs doing man hours will be unbelievable (richard did most of his own took him over a year i think) there are several issues to contend with least being the firewall as the bulkhead has to be belled out to get it to fit also you have to lose one of the turbos as it won't fit with the 2. Cheaper option would be to break yours down and buy the turbo'd gpx for sale in scoland (former project f car i think about £7k) if you wana go down the power route

As much as I'd love to do something along those lines I think it's best left for somewhere down the road. Finances wouldn't permit anything like that at the moment.

I've been getting calls all morning from breakers in the UK. Best so far is these guys who have one with 49km out of a tip GPX which was rear-ended.

They're looking for £500 and only £100 for delivery. The catch is I only get 1 month warranty.

I wouldn't worry too much about the warranty man, if there is something seriously wrong with the engine you should be able to tell within the month....but then again it will probably be more than a month by the time you can turn her over in the car....

Thought this might interest you if it stays cheap enough, you can break the rest down and sell on maybe it then won't cost you a penny for the engine

i think its a 97, 5 speed .
some of the bits are off but maybe you can combine the 2 engines ( yours & that one )

the scrapy is on the right hand side how you go from that big rondabout ( about 500 m) , its somewhere on the back (silver )

If it doesn't have a complete engine it won't be much use because I need to directly transplant it to keep the car on the road (I'm still driving it).

I'll go check it out though. At worst he might have the pistons, con-rods and bearings which I'll need when reconditioning mine. Cheers!

Well I take my hat off to you Seb. I went up there this morning an put a deposit on the engine. They reckon they'll have it ready by Thursday.

Not only did they undercut EVERY other price I was offered (and there were dozens), they gave me a money back garuantee in case the engine doesn't run when I fit it. Furthermore, as it's 300 meters from my house I don't have to pay delivery.

You just saved me a fortune Seb, I think I owe you a few rounds of drinks! ;)

It couldn't have been better timing either because on my way back from the bank the car completely gave up. I just about got it home. Some noise it was making...

I very much doubt it, in fact i'd say for certain that the engine you get from them is marked in some way, shape or form for that exact reason

I recenlty had a couple of fto owners (none from this site) try it on after receiving parts. One guy I sold an engine and 2 weeks later he rang me to say the engine was knackered when they started it up. Said I could hear it down the phone if I like, and I did hear an engine running and sounding like the bottom end had gone. I then told him there was no problem that once I received back my engine I would replace it with another one, (think he thought it was my last one so I would have to give his money back) even said I wouls travel to Cork with it for him, ONCE I RECEIVED BACK THE ENGINE WITH THE SERIAL NO I GAVE HIM. Said he would contact me that weekend to organise. Low and behold 3 months later have not heard a word from him. Even talked to his so called "mechanic". It is for this reason I take down the serial no of every part I sell.

Another guy tried it on with a starter approx 2 weeks ago.

Not worth the hassle guys. especially when these guys are a bit on the touchy side from reading DIRTYLOPEZ post on the calipers

I was kidding! I wouldn't expect it to work and I wouldn't do it even if I could get away with it. I don't need that kind of karma. ;)

The calipers thing had me worried but to be honest they were quite friendly with me! I gave them a call there and they said it would be ready for collection in the morning as per our agreement so I'll see what happens.

I'll ask about the calipers too and see if I get the same reaction.

Yeah I wouldn't want to carry the thing - even if it was just a few hundred meters.. :-)

did you get all the extra bits - alternator, starter and such bits?

No just the engine. They left the throttle body on it though at least but usually you won't get any of the ancillaries with it. Especially not for €600!

I'll be setting aside the whole weekend to fit it with a couple of friends. I hope to god it goes well!
