New Steering wheel, Horn doesnt work

Postby TonyC » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:51 am

Gents,

I'm currently getting a little bit of work done on my GR. New break pads (thanks Seb) are getting fitted tonight, new wheels went on on saturday and I got a new MOMO steering wheel installed at the weekend. Problem is that the horn doesnt work with the new wheel. The lad who fitted it just said "oh we couldnt get that working" as if it was a minor detail. He says he connected it up but to no joy. Anyone have similar experiences? I'm sure you all have changed lots of steering wheels.
Cheers,

Tony

had a MOMO wheel on my last FTO where the boss wiring wasn't working proprerly, solution was to fit a button on the dash for the horn.

Is that ok for NCT people? Sounds good to me, did it look ok or did it look a bit out of place

it's fine for the NCT, I had mine on the blanker panel below the stereo. not as convenient as having it on the wheel though.

Or you could modify your "boss" with a "horn ring" from a standard steering wheel.

I'm sure what you mean here Muad?
I'm pretty useless with cars.

Also Colm, how difficult is it to setup the button and is there a "kit" or something you would reccommend to do this with?

Cheers lads

Your problem is likely to be fairly straightforward esp considering the horn worked before you changed your steering wheel. I would say its likely to be a problem with earthing the horn correctly - What steering wheel boss did you use?

Earth contact is through the steering column by metal connector. For the connector to make contact you need a connector disk the same size as on the original wheel - some boss kits may not have this.

I used the "earth ring" from a standard FTO steeringwheel - glued it onto the back of the new Boss & soldered a wire from the ring to the boss to make sure there was an electrical connection.. then I wired the horn button on the new wheel through the Boss as per normal - and presto..

It did take a bit of "blue peter" but it works..

Maud is correct here, alot of aftermarket wheels have a small diameter Brass earthing ring and therefore it will not contact the clock spring.

Remove the brass ring from the rear of the MItsi wheel and bond it to the new boss. Will post pics later today showing what to do.
