Can I get your expert diagnosis :)

Roysh.

Drove the car a small distance, parked it, came back and it wouldnt start.
Basically a "clickety-clickety" with a single turnover, and the voltage meter dropping to zero during the key turn.
Right so, battery is dead.
Got a jumpstart from a mate, started.
Ran for five mins, turned off, tried to start again, same thing.
Jumpstarted again.
Drove back to the office (2 mins)
By the time I got there the engine was misfiring and the rev counter was bouncing up and down.
Battery wont charge so I assume the alternator, but would that cause the misfiring?

Sounds like alternator - if you're running low on electricity the engine wont fire correctly. How did the dash light behave? did they fade out?

Nope, there is still enough power to keep them on, however the headlights are super dim.

Any idea on how much GR alternators are?

I can feel my wallet starting to smoulder.

Quick way to trest the alternator..

Get the car running - remove the (-) lead from the battery - if the car dies the alternator is gone..

Check the usual suspects..

RiceRocket, Rory and Camskill..
..also there's almost always a few up on eBay at varying prices..(50gbp+)

Theres quite a few Auto Electricians around Limerick that could recondition your alternator for you. Shouldn't cost the earth.

Can you recommend one MFFTO? You would probably know them better than I :)

This is the first trouble I have had with this since I bought it.

Also can someone PM me Rorys number. I had it on PM from CJ but it look like old PM's before 2005 have been cleared.

When my alt went, a electric warning light came up on the dash and you should be able to hear a drone coming from the altenator. If that's the problem get a new one, not factory recon as it's a female dog to get out. Run a search here on the forum for part numbers etc, as GS, GR and GPX are all different fittings. Mine was a GR.

Haven't needed to use an auto electrician but Christy Madden - off Ballysimon road - Monaclinoe Ind Estate - comes well recommended from petrolhead mates that have used him. 061 409860
