Cool, glad you got some good news out of this.
If it comes to replacing the car, will you get another FTO? Great value out there at the moment. :)

Karl
Do you have any details of the other cars that were stolen. Colour models etc. I got a call earlier from a guy looking to sell a stolen recovered FTO for parts.
Any chance the Garda you were talking to would give you some insight. I believe member of this site, especially in the dublin area would the the best at spotting one of the stolen ones.
A really long shot but would he give you contact details of the other owners and we could get on here with details.

I have no pics to put up. Mine would be easy to recognise, it has a silver petrol flap(the metal part) as mine broke, replaced it but never got around to respraying it. It had the brake calipers sprayed red. Also the stereo/gear surround was broke so my sis's fella made me a piece to put in so as I could still have a radio. It was made of stainless steel so shouldn't be too hard to recognise. Its definately a one off piece.
With regards to the garda that was talking to me, I never got his name. And when I rang the station to inquire I was told they wouldn't give out that sort of information.
To be honest I dont think they're that interested in robbed cars. I happened to mention to 1 of the lads that the thieves couldn't have got far as I'd only just above empty left in the tank. So he said tell the guards as they prob filled up somewhere local, and more than likely drove off without paying, and would be caught somewhere on CCTV. I'm still waiting for them to ring me back to take the details as the computer wasn't working when I rang. I'm sure its just they have more important things to be doing.

TopCat I was only thinking about that. I might see about getting another FTO maybe just upgrade a bit and go for the 2ltr mivec or something. And maybe a manual this time. It all depends on what the settlement figure is. With the value on cars dropping I cant see it being that much and having no NCT wont help. And the way the funds are at the mo I'd only be able to buy something for the settlement figure plus a grand (maybe) of my own. I'm doing a course at the mo so the money situation aint great.
What would a 96 gs auto be going for these days? Anyone any idea. I was thinking 2ish. Going by whats on sale out there.
What is the best FTO model to go for? (ie Whats the fastest??)

A Manual Mivec is hard to beat (GPX/GPvR) but condition is almost everything when it comes to buying what is now an 8-14 year old car.

Make sure that whatever FTO you buy has a good service history - look for items such as dampers, droplinks, bushes, brake pads and disks etc changed at some stage - gearbox, brake and oil fluid changes - put it up on a lift and check all suspension components and check for rust. Drive the FTO and listen out for knocking from the suspension / wear on the gearbox syncros etc.

Find any probs and you have ammo for reducing the asking price.

Search the technical forums here and you'll quickly find out what are the most common issues on the FTO.

CJ's old GPX Tip is for sale at the minute - you'll be hard pushed to find a better FTO for the money - http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... php?t=8778

I did see that one alright but its 94 thinking of something newer. My own was96 so no point going older. There are some nice ones for sale in uk. Had a look on pistonheads.co.uk. Might be worth getting it there they seem reasonable not sure what VRT would be.

96 or 95, they're all old. better to have CJs old car or a similarly maintained car than the majority of 95/96 FTOs around.

^^^ what he said. that car has been so well looked after its frightening. id be looking at that one before anything else. I doubt you'll hear a negative about it. And although its 94 it has a facelift bumper and looks to be in better nic than any other out there. (and it has leather! )

Yip - FTO has got to the age now that years are starting to make very little difference and maintenance is everything.

I'd rather a well maintained 94 than a scrubby 00.

Are you guys on commision if the car is sold?? I understand that its been looked after but its still 15 years old. I'd just prefer something newer, I cant explain why. I guess its just a personnal thing. I really loved my FTO, and had decided to get a 2ltr Mivec at some point. Its come around sooner(a lot sooner) than I was expecting and I just want to get the right one. Preferably one thats as new as they come 2000/1 with low milage and maybe manual this time. I loved the tiptronic but not sure if I want another.

There's a nice '97 GPX on pistonheads if you don't mind travelling.

I'm not a mechanic but I'd know my way around cars. When I was looking for my 1st FTO, I saw and drove a lot of FTOs and there is no connection between the year of an FTO and the condition. I drove a few ragged ones (facelifts included) that would need a good few quid spent on them before they'd feel really tight.
Even Bernards is an old car now (no offence B!), and keeping it in that shape is no easy task, it has very little to do with it being 00, the mileage is around the same as my 95. If I had the inclination I could get my 95 to drive as tight as his, by replacing bushings and droplinks, treating it to some top quality tyres, and by doing a few jobs.
The point I'm trying to make is it doesn't make sense to dismiss a car for the sake of 2 years on the reg on a 15 year old car.

Just giving our own personal opinions - I don't know the chap that currently owns CJs exFTO - but I do know that FTO and having driven it would say its about as tight as FTO's get regardless of age.

I can understand the preference for a manual though - If I was to buy my third FTO it'd have to be a mivec manual (or sorted VR4 engined conversion) - but I'm a bit of a performance fiend!

None taken, in fact I agree 100%.
When I decided to buy it had more to do with the colour, condition and a few mods than the year, although I do like the rarity factor... only 160 produced.
i.e. less than a nakaya tune.

I've purposely kept out of this one up until now but one thing is clear with regard to FTOs - condition is key. I understand the motivation to pick up a newer car, I'm that way inclined myself. That said, I always try to balance things out in terms of the age / condition battle that goes on inside my head any time a look at a car.

I can't speak for the current condition of this particular 94 GPX, all I know is that I spent a small fortune on getting the car running the way I wanted it, particularly with regard to the suspension. In terms of handling, the only car that came close to my / Adrians / Robs GPX at the time was MfFTOs. The car was very well maintained during my tenure, I would be surprised if it needs any work, aside from the odd service (reduce cost of ownership).

Karl, I suggest you go out and drive a few newer models then take a spin in this old 94 - you might be surprised with the outcome....

Have to agree with majority here, condition > age

When mine is washed/clean (not as often as I'd like!) I get loads of compliments on the paintwork/general condition of the car, most are amazed to find its a 95.

Hope you get a proper figure for the car btw, sometimes when they sweet talk you into add-ons like NCB protection and it backfires on them!
Get out of here Nebulon! No one likes your style...
