Please help!!!

Postby clarkenator » Fri Mar 20, 2009 4:44 pm

Hi,

I bought myself an FTO abut 2 months ago. A '95 1.8 auto GS, with 29000 miles on it.

I had it for the first 3 weeks running beatifully I absolutely love it. However 4 weeks ago it developed a problem. After about 4 miles it just won't pull away and the more gas you give it the more it will stumble. However if you switch it off for about 5 mintues it will drive for another 3 miles until it does it again. It will tick over fine, and it will pull like a train for the first 4 miles, this is really bugging me now.

I've changed the fuel filter. Just to ad insult to injury the garage i let have a look at it, has had for 4 weeks and they still havent found the problem yet.

I WANT MY FTO BACK!!

Please help me :(

Thanks guys. Matt.

First guess is coilpacs, plugs or leads.

is tehre a difference in exhaust tone? a more grumbley noise?

I bought it with a hole in the exhaust but its a only a small one.. to be honest when i had it i haven't noticed any difference in tone, but i haven't driven it for 4 weeks lol.

I took out the plugs and cleaned them. apart from that im at a loss..

Yea it might be.. I did take the fuel pump out aswell and cleaned it, but how could you tell if it isn't working? because it only happens when moving, or quite hard acceloration when stationary, only after 4 miles.

Thanks for the suggestions :) keep them coming..

im still going for coil packs,

the noise in the tone your looking for is a missfire?

i dont really understand you explanation...

Does it drive ok and then die off after a bit
or is it bad and then gets better?

No, it doesn't missfire. What happens, when it is first started it will drive fine for about 4-5 miles. Then, it will stutter, the more acceleration you give it the more it will die, you can drive it but with only 10% throttle max. You then have to switch it off wait for 5 minutes then it will fine for another 2-3 miles untill it does it again..

I spoke to my mechanic and he has said the ECU is fine. He had the diagnostics connected while driving it and apparently a gearbox code flashed while driving.

Is there any gearbox sensors that might cause this? or anything else that you might think it might be?

Thanks for your help :)

No, dodgy gearbox input, output or speed sensors won't cause this problem, as per dan, check plugs, leads and coilpacks.

Don't rule out a clogged fuel filter or fuel pump issues as was mentioned.

On the V6 engine, there is 1 coil pack per spark plug, and they are located directly over the plug. you need to move/remove the plenum to access them.

Not sure where they are on a 1.8, but it's just a matter of following the plug leads from the spark plugs and finding them.

I'm nearly, 100% sure there's only 3 on the v6 colm. Over plugs 1,3 & 5
As the fto shares leads(and coilpacs) between cylinders 1&2 3&4 5&6

Is it possible that a gearbox oil change might fix this? Just I have read that if you dont have the right oil in the gear box its does all kinds of funny stuff to the engine. Any ideas?

The 1.8 has 2 diff setup for coil packs. some are fittecd with jus 2 and others are fitted with 4 same as the ones on the V6, only 1 per plug.

I would suspect a plug lead problem. or a clogged filter as mentioned above. May a problem with a IFS (Ignition failure sensor) also

It may be worth checking your injector plugs and loom around them for corrosion and also make sure that the injector plugs are sitting tight, a poor contact gives these symptoms, often a small cable tie will secure them better.
