Grating Noise in Manual FTO

Postby paulkenny » Fri Aug 05, 2005 10:35 am

Hi,
I picked up my new FTO from the docks yesterday :D she's got highish mileage for a 98 jap import but the upside of that is that the cambelt was done about 10K km ago so that's an expence I won't need to worry about. Overall I'm v happy with it. The body is in great condition, the inside needs a bit of TLC but the leather interior should sort that out, am enjoying getting the hands ripped off me fitting that at the moment!
Anyway on the drive home from the docks I noticed a grating noise coming from the drivetrain after changing gear when the revs were at around the 1500 RPM mark. Once the revs raise up to the 2000 mark the noise is gone and everything is ok. This happens in every gear.
I am guessing that this is not normal behaviour, has anyone encountered this behaviour befor or any ideas as to what the problem might be.
Cheers,
Paul

I had a kinda crunching in a manual box before and i changed the gear oil and added a treatment and it sorted it out,

I think slick 50 sell a gear treatment that you can add without changing the gear oil as it comes with a small siphoning kit. I dont know if this would suit the FTO though.

Thats a good point, no one ever seems to change the manual trans fluid these days, I havn't got the workshop manuals to hand but I think it should be done every 40k or so, anyone?

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies, by the sounds of it and posts regarding similar problems mentioned on the FTOOC forum it sounds like this is nothing to be overly concerned about. Though I might try a gearbox oil change if I find it annoys me a lot.
Cheers,
Paul

BTW.
The car is a silver GPX with a version R spoiler won't have it registered till next week, looking forward to a proper drive in it.

Finally got your hands on it, must be a happy bunny!

Re the crunching noise, I've never had a crunching noise from my manual FTO, and I hope I never do!

I'd be interested in changing my gearbox oil myself, certainly wouldn't do any harm anyway. Something to add to my 'to-do' list, other latest addition is fix my passenger side window, isn't going down any more. :? At least its stuck up and not down I guess!

Id stay away from that slick 50, not much good has been said about it.
Iv never had any noise come my manual, i did change the gearbox oil about three months ago. Very simple job, slowest part of it was putting the new oil back in. You have to use a piece of tubing which has to be very narrow so that it can fit into the filler hole. The old oil was only slightly darker that the new oil, apart from that, there was no difference, the old oil didnt contain any metal or solids whatsoever.
I added 250ml (i think) extra, i read it some where that it would help with the gear changes.

dont mean to sound sarkie  , but an oil change is no big deal, run engine for a while before you start, just to heat oil a little aiding flow, check old oil for contaminants, then pour in new oil. like Daz said add a half litre or so extra, a few mates used castol RS recently , noticed a better wind up on engine, so i thinking of using this in my car soon.

keep away from slick 50 etc, ive also heard bad stories.
reminds me of a thing called "Redex" back in the mid 80s this was said to be amazing stuff, great when mixed with ur petrol to clean combustion chambers , it actually stripped any lubricants layed down and seized many an engine.

so i can only sumise from the stories ive hear, that this slick 50 is having a similar effect on the gearing

i have that exact same noise too, i was told not to worry about it. noisey up to 2k revs and then its gone. It hasn't caused any problems.

If you do go ahead with that oil change, let me know if it removes the noise.
