noisy noisy exhaust,expert advice needed

Postby poolfan » Wed Aug 22, 2007 7:44 pm

hi,lookin for ur combined expertise, had look at gorgeous fto on sat, ticked all boxes except it sounded very boy racerish, bloke in garage told me it was natural noise but no way,i presume there was induction kit or something fitted, but am clueless,if there was,is it expensive to take off and replace and am i being reasonable to ask the garage to do it?

If its an aftermarket exhaustr I'm sure you'll have no end to the queue of people who will swop you for an orig exhaust.

Is this FTO up for sale on any websites so we can see whats actually on it?

Took a look at the carzone pics - that's a stock exhaust and it should not sound loud. Louder than a normal car yes - it is a V6, however I don't think the impression should be boy racer so there may be something wrong with it, maybe a hole in the centre section (common fault).

Check for induction kit : open the bonnet and check whether air filter is a large black plastic cube shaped unit. If not, it has aftermarket filter. However, these do not really affect the tick over sound when stationary

Check for other induction mod : look under car and see if the CAT is in place. If not, there will definitely be a modified and louder sound at idle. I doubt this is the case though as it is not wise to use straight through pipe (removing CAT) with stock exhaust as this is not what it was tuned for optimally.

By any chance is the centre section rusted through. This will cause it to be a lot louder than normal.

As per Kace - that FTO looks completely stock - i'd be surprised if there was even an aftermarket induction in it. Certainly shouldn't sound loud - I'd ask to get it on a ramp - a quick look by an experienced mechanic will tell you all you need to know. While its up there check the Anti Roll bar bushes and the Droplinks. Also ask when the car last had a cambelt change - if it hasn't had or they don't know then you should get them to do it if they are serious about selling this FTO.

Given the price of a 00 FTO, a small thing like an exhaust part shouldn't put you off. if the exhaust is faulty it'll show up on an NCT.

Its doesn't sound like a "dodgy car" - ARB bushes and droplinks , exhaust, cambelt etc are all wearing parts and will be in various stages of condition no matter what FTO you look at - all I'm saying is get the dealer to sort it out as part of the deal or else use his lack of knowledge if condition is unknown to negotiate a better price on the FTO and use the money saved to sort out the niggly bits.

Congrats & welcome to the club - the FTO is a fab car and you won't regret it - what does the dealer consider as "sorting" your exhuast though? Is he going to replace a section? Did he say what was wrong with it?

My girlfriend had a similar reaction. But without the nagging beforehand. ;)

The wife likes ours too, shame she can't drive :D
And she is now in the rear seat, as our 2 year old loves to ride shotgun.
only problem is he calls the car Lightling, as in the cars Cartoon. Funny as it's been called that a few times by other kids.
Lots to think about, nothing to worry about!

Be careful of your girlfriend Poolfan.

It will start off with her borrowing it for calling over to one of her friends and next thing you know the FTO will be described as "our car" the next time you get a chance to drive it will be when it is either broken down or needs petrol.
