Help! Please! ECU diagnostic codes, rev counter etc

Postby spockherbert » Tue Oct 19, 2004 9:49 pm

Hi Guys,

Just found this list so thought you'd know the answers to the following!

FTO GR '94

A new stepper motor was fitted in July 2003 to cure over-revving problems. This year's major service included a new timing belt. (150,000km)

All was fine until last month.

There was a pop (sounded like a relay tripping behind the glove box) and then the rev counter died. It comes back to life every time the car starts but then dies again after 10 mins or so. Occasionally comes back to life but is then very erratic.

Then it started cutting out at idle - most inconvenient if you're turning into or out of a junction.

Next it has started a symptom that feels like it is choking - hesitant with power delivery on acceleration.

Yesterday and today the ECU warning light (yellow, top left) has come on once during one of the choking episodes but then goes off again.

I had Brian from Newry run a MUT diagnostic and he came up with the stepper motor being too low (5 instead of 25) plus codes 44, 52, 53. He didn't tell me what the codes mean and what I need to do.

Interestingly McNamarra's had another FTO ('95) also with problems. Is this an age-related thing?

Urgent help please and thanks!

Feel free to email to <mckrll@indigo.ie>

Here is the codes taken form www.ftowa.com, Yours all seem to relate to the ignition coil and power tranistor unit?. I had some symptoms not to different to yours and all it was was a sensor that had fallen loose. Make sure yours are all tight run the engine and shake all wires and connections and see if it stalls.

Ive never heard of FTO's getting unreliable with age before as long as they are basically maintained.

Hopefully you can get it sorted soon

CODE ITEM
11 Oxygen Sensor
12 Air Flow Sensor
13 Intake air temperature sensor
14 Throttle position sensor
15 ISC Motor Position Sensor
21 Engine coolant temperature sensor
22 Crank angle sensor
23 Camshaft position sensor
24 Vehicle speed sensor
25 BARO Sensor (listed as 26 in one info source)
31 Detonation sensor
32 Vacuum sensor
36 Ignition Timing Adjustment Signal
39 Oxygen Sensor
41 Injector system
42 Fuel Pump
43 EGR
44 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 1 & 4)
52 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 2 & 5)
53 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 3 & 6)

55 Idle Air Control Valve/Servo Valve Position Sensor
61 Communications wire with A/T-ECU
62 Intake air control valve position sensor
64 Alternator FR terminal
71 Vacuum control solenoid valve (TCL)
72 Ventilation control solenoid valve (TCL)

I appreciate your sharing this information. I went to http://www.ftowa.com to look for the data meself. I could not seem to find any. I know it kind of sounds retarded but what am I missing here? Do I need to register to get it? Thanks.

The information quoted is still there.
To be honest though, if you're having technical problems you're better off starting a new thread in the appropriate forum than unnecessarily resurrecting an ancient thread (it is over 6 years old!).
