Failed NCT. Inner Tie Rod End

Postby mcgon1979 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 12:30 pm

Failed NCT. The inner Tie Rod end was "worn" so they would not test tracking.
Have ordered one. Does anyone know are they all the same for the FTOs or are there any variations GPvR or GPX or GR etc. I doubt it, but I need to be sure because if it is wrong I will have to do a full test as the re-test is 2 days from the 30 day limit allowed for retests. If you know what I mean.

thanks

I failed on the same thing before, just make sure you order the right part. (not sure GPX Vs GPvR)

yeah, this is the problem. I have a gut feeling this is the type of part thats wrong.
I'll go and get the chasis number I think... and ring them back.

just read your thread Bernard!!!! WTF?!?!? It says "INNER TIE ROD END" on my failure report.
Do I need to book a ramp and confirm that they listed the right worn part. No way I am doing a full re-test and switching the cat out again. If they tell me the wrong part is worn Im not going to hire a mechanic to make sure they are right before I buy the part. that would seriously annoy me... oh, I can tell already this is going to be messy...

confirm which end is which, I'm not 100% sure that the outer track rod end is the one towards the outside of the car.

well the guy in NCT said it was the inner tie rod end, and thats what I ordered from the parts people.
all I can do is hope he is a mechanic and knows his outer from his inner :(

The inner rack joint (tie-rod) - the adjustable part between the rack and the rod end
and The Track rod end - going from the rack joint and bolting to the hub

So at which point does it change from being a track rod to a tie rod?? If the the end of the rod is reffered to as a "track rod end" is it not safe to assume that the rod leading from it is therefore the "track rod"? :D

tie rods we are talking about. inner ones to be precise. no mention of track rods.
It's at time like this I wish I had failed on lights or wipers. :) getting parts for the FTO is a pain.
I have already got wrong brake pads a couple of times. so don't hold very high confidence on getting the correct inner tie rod. :smt001

You'd really have to ask a mechanic! I think the general term was track rods back in the day, then when more complex suspension systems came in, tie rods came along. I'm not 100% sure to be honest. All I do know is that the track rod end is still called a track rod end!

This isn't helping the original question, but the real issue is identifying which part the NCT guy has an issue with - there's plenty of scope for confusion.

I'm 99% sure the bit you need is the adjuster and not the joint where the rod meets the hub.

is it this bit?

Well my "inner tie rod end" turned out to be a "steering rack end".... if that helps :?

yeah if that happens with mine, I won't be paying for another full test. no way. I will write to and complain to whoever I need to. they only had a couple of dates available for retest, and the one I got is only a few days before the 30 days to re-test expire. So if its the wrong part, Im out of time. I may just "buy an NCT" then for 250euro.

I heard that several NCT people have been sacked for allowing "dealers" of second hand cars to jump the queues and get cars tested on one days notice. They were accepting bribes for this... (was reported in the indo a few days ago)

The inner arm thst connects to therack is the "INNER TIE ROD (", The ball joint that screws into it and bolts to the hub is the "TRE (Tie Rod End)"

Jack the car up lock the steering, grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o clock, rock it back and forth and see where the play is. Also check to see if the steering rack gaitor is torn or if the rubber on the end is perished.

From experience it is mostly the inner arm that goes.

By the way both can be bought in factors

Ends are the same as a colt.

Furthermore both are the same no matter what model FTO you have
