Prime Time -Cars for sale on the side of the raod

Did anyone see prime time last night? They had Cyril McHugh of SIMI and some FF politician, giving out about cars for sale on the road side of the road. These apparently cause a distraction to road users and are therefore a hazard. These people are apparently "not paying taxes or rates, and are therefore operating in the black economy". There is not a "level playing field" with the honest-to-goodness members of simi, who have to pay, taxes, rates, insurances, etc.
The way these vendors were being protrayed was as if they were drug dealers preying on the innocent. Illegal practice this, black economy that, shoddy goods, clocked crashed cars, no history, etc.
This was a hugely one sided discussion. Now Cyril Mchugh did mention the cartell facility that his SIMI members could check the history of their stock. He implied that no such checks were not available to the 'side of the road' buyer, which is simply not true.
The illegality here is advertising a car for sale in a public place. This is right up there with the illegality of parking on a double yellow line, They were talking about prison sentences for offenders, FFS.
Now there are people operating businesses on the side of the road, are some of their 'stock' may well be substandard. But there is also a huge number of genuine private sellers (by that I mean that the are actually private sellers , I'm not implying that their cars are genuine ).
Faced with the prospect of changing your car. You will be offered a pittance as a trade in from your local SIMI dealer, in addition you will also generally have to pay more than you would for a equivalent private sale car. -double hit.
If you do a straight deal with a dealer (cash sale in order to get a discount), or private seller for that matter, you will then be faced with haveing to dispose of your old car. More and more people are selling their cars privately and I for one believe it's beacuse they know they are being fleeced on price by car dealers. Are we to lock these people up with the drug dealers and the paedophiles?
