Manual Conversion

Postby Aido C » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:09 pm

I'm looking at doing a manual conversion. I seen the post Rory put up. I'm just wondering if I need to change the fly wheel too or is it the same on the tiptronic FTO?

Would be a lot less hassle and prob cheaper in the long just run to sell your own and buy a manual there are plenty around for reasonable money in the current climate

I know exactly how he feels my car is in the bodyshop at the mo gettin a spruce up of the paintwork when this is done she'll be pretty much how I want her with the exception of the tip gearbox, but my cars interior was the thing that sealed the deal when I bought her : black leatherette seats, facelift Momo wheel, kmc dials. So I made the decision to get an Impreza turbo next April

Its an immaculate example alright. I know we talked about this briefly at the FTO/Celica meet but the best thing I ever did was a manual conversion. I know now that I only had 3/4 weeks of Tip driving but I hated it in comparison to a manual. Many will defend the tip boxes but for me personally theres no comparison. All CJs work maintaining that box though... you should be able to recoup a small bit of the cost anyway by selling that on. Steelroe doing it for you?

Agreed - This FTO is def worth keeping - do the conversion if you want a manual - (having owned both Tip & Man) I know I would.

Agreed, that FTO is no ordinary one, its in remarkable condition and if you want a manual I think you should convert that one as the whole thing is in such good nick.

Keep the car Aido, you know you want to! You should be able to recoup some money on the tip box, I never had any issue with it (it was well maintained). You'll need to change the flywhell also, woth considering a lightened aftermarket one. Would you tackle the job yourself or have a mechanic do the work?

Rory said he'd do it for me, but I'm now thinking about doing it with one of my friends. Hes pretty good with cars and he has a garage to do it in. It would be pretty cheap to do it that way too. Dan is breaking one of his FTOs so I was chatting to him yesterday about buying all the parts required for the job off him. We agreed on a price and everything. Deal was done. Now he says he might be selling the box and shafts to someone else. He said he would let me know next week when he has the car broken.

I know I want to :D Theres not a chance I would sell that car.

If the fly wheel is different, do I need to change the starter motor too?

starter motor from the grey GR tip fitted a GR manual. I reckon they're the same for all V6 models.

Sounds to me like you're being messed about Aido, keep your options open in terms of a supplier.

And a carbon non-slip clutch so it has been kicked around a bit by that too. The ad he put up was €150 for the box.
You haven't come across any conversion kits yet Rory? I tried ringing a few breakers but they all seem to only have automatic FTOs apart from one which was a bit pricey.

It was a tip but he was chatting to his boss and they are getting another FTO next week for breaking. They are not sure what gearbox is in it yet but he'll let me know as soon as they find out. Will keep you posted.

Just seen an ad on ebay for an engine and manual gearbox for €550 buy now or best offer. You could contact the seller and see if they are willing to sell all the bits you need for a conversion. Worth a try anyway. See the ad here:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/FTO-MIVEC-V6-24V-MANUAL-ENGINE-AND-GEARBOX_W0QQitemZ220469240801QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3354fda3e1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Looking at the pic it might be the "Scrappy" FTO that was on done deal, the one crashed at the back and had the leather interior. So you may already have contacted him.

When I contacted RiceRocket I was told they dont sell the kits individually, that the conversion had to be done by them to avail of the parts... I got my gearbox off www.1stchoice.co.uk Its one of those sites that email the breakers for you. I was waiting 3/4 weeks after payment for the box though but I guess thats down to the luck of the draw. Either way, make sure they include the clutch fork... Jesus the trouble myself and Rory had with that! Theres also a brcket that may need changing depending on the box. Again Rory is your man to ask there.

I got my kit there today. I went down to Mayo early this morning and rip everything out of the car. I left Dublin at 6.30am and got back at 10 tonight. Was a long day but a learning experience
The oil seal and bearing is gone on the gearbox but that shouldn't be too big of a deal hopefully. I got it all for a pretty good price so I'm happy:)

Fair play Aido, you're not wasting any time with this anyway. :)

So you and your friend gonna tackle it? Best of luck with it either way.

Yea, I think I might tackle it myself. I'm not really getting much work at the moment so I can't really afford to get someone to do it and I've loads of free time so I might as well. After seeing how everything comes out, it doesn't seem so difficult putting it all back in. Anyway I'll go to Mass the morning I start this job for good luck and to have God on my side. Think I might need it;)

I'm not in a mad hurry. Just not wasting any time waiting Dan. Or wasting any time on Dan. He was trying to start a bidding war with me and this other lad on (probably half wrecked) parts after he and I agreed on a price. I don't like that kinda crap TBH.

Rory has been a great help, answering all my question, giving me tips and good support. Thanks Rory :smt002 !

It's not going to plan now. I brought the gearbox to the garage today and the box is wrecked. I have to get another box now:( I sure something will up soon though. At least I have everything else I need.
