Just got me a twin oval blueflame (sorry Muad, but that Mongoose is a bit too big since all the hype about modded exhausts).
As well as a new timing belt, a new water pump and an ITG induction kit.
Hopefully it will be only noisy in a good way after this.

Is €450 a good price to change all that?

if you`re talking just about parts - yes, but changing the timing belt is a quite dificult job (but doable) so you have to add some for a mechanic (dont know how much they want)

You can fit the filter yourself - very easy, water pump too

No hard feelings :-)
Congrats on the bits..

If you want to save dosh on the mechanics bill it's largely a matter of how much time and effort you want to put into it yourself..is it worth your while to do it yourself or would you only get annoyed doing it?

Fitting the filter is super easy - haven't done a pump myself - but if you can find the instructions have a look and compare with your abilities...

I'd leave the timing belt to the mechanic - I'd bee too afraid to make a mess of it..

I would say €450 is a little steep. I have paid far less for far more work done on my FTO. What mechanic/garage are you using?

That's what I paid for a full service, belts, plugs, filters, water pump, even the wipers.

EDIT: We posted at the same time Dean, same mechanic too!
It's a little pricey perhaps but he did an excellent job on mine...

:? well you could fit just the water pump yourself, you'd just need to wait while the mechanic stripped all the bits for the timing belt. Its a 2 second job if you're going the timing belt but its practically the same work needed as doing the belts.

He is very good and knows his stuff on FTO's - however I still maintain he should be able to do better than that - tell him I said to sharpen his pencil a little.

First bit yes second bit NO!!!!! the water pump pully is on the timing/cam belt if your not mechanically inclined or a novice with cars, do this at your peril mess it up the cost is a new engine. at least if the mechanic cocks it up he has to replace it. also 2 things about the water pump either 1) unless its really knackered and i mean seized or pi$$ing out water wait till you do a timing/cam belt change rather than go at it yourself or 2) if its just starting to give trouble and you don't want to risk/wait for next timing/cam belt change get the timing/cam belt done at the same time anyway.

Daz...

Edit just seen kev's post maybe should have read fuul thread before posting :)

Ha! Just got a quote for around €150 for the cambelt/water pump change.
I plan to do the exhaust myself.

Dean wrote:Right, I have cancelled this with him.

Had it all booked for tomorrow, asked a few (obvious) questions about whether he was insured to drive my car and whether I could get details of work done, and he turned from nice to nasty in seconds.
I am so angry with this guy right now. I dont care how good he is, if he talks like that to me he can go screw himself.

Dean,

Joe rang me to ask about this. He is doing work on my mates high peformance cars when asked. He has an excellent set-up at his house (where he services his own rally car) in Limerick and really knows his stuff. He works in a Main Dealers as a mechanic so anything outside of this is more or less a hobby for him. Nevertheless he does have a garage plate and full insurance for cars up to €90K - I trust him with my €30K + 350Z and many of my mates have similar cars and also have no issues here.

I guess he just doesn't want too many questions asked when he's doing this on the side over his evenings and weekends (Tax man etc). What other information exactly did you need to know to ensure your FTO was going to be serviced correctly etc???

As mentioned Joe mostly just works on cars like the FTO/Zed/Scooby/Evos etc as much as a hobby as anything else and has always been open and helpful with me - for instance 2 weeks ago I was able to drive my Zed over to him at 9pm at night and we both worked on the car till after 12pm. He doesn't know you Dean and I guess just got nervous with all the questions when I simply recommended him as a mate that knows his FTO's. If you are looking for receipts etc for work done then you are probably better off going down the much more expensive main dealer route where you'll get some muppet working on your car that hasn't the foggiest about FTO's.

Anyway, I am calm now, deep breaths and all that.

I apologise for any misunderstanding on my part and I seem to be the only one that has had a problem with him, you can re-assure him that you wouldnt have given his number to anyone who was going to get him in the crap with anyone else, however he wasnt to know that. Either way, ill edit out the bad stuff if you can take it out of your quote mffto. But tell him to let people talk occasionally, it might prevent situations like this. :?

That's a very cheap quote for a timing belt on a quad cam car. I paid more than that myself and Im practically best mates with the guy who did it for me. It's not exactly a 40 minute job or anything.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod, I just fitted the exhaust tonight.
So....sweet.
After a month of almost deafening myself this thing purrs like a kitten (a really big one).
Put the top end treatment in too, I love it.
