What do you reckon it'd be like?

While my first thoughts went something like: Rear wheel drive, turbo and slightly bigger, now I reckon if they were to replace it this would be unlikely.

I rekon it'd be:
Based on the Lancer or Colt
Turbo diesel or hybrid powered, or a small turbocharged petrol engine
Front wheel drive
Maybe have a DSG style box

and would probably showcase some new technololgy too.

It's not realistically gonna happen, but if it did, what route do you reckon they'd take, and what would you like to see?

I'm thinking they'd probably take another model and put a nice looking shell on it - minimize r&d costs as car companies have to these days. That'd mean noting ground breaking, nothing extraordinary.

What I'd like to see done on the other hand - body with sleek curves along the lines of the FTO, adjustable suspension - sporty handling or more comfort, technology along the lines of that car they had in Top Gear in Japan, was it a NSX replacement or something like that, that shows you what's going on your engine from the point of view of pressures, temperatures, power output, that kinda thing. Properly tuned exhaust system, cold air intake. Reasonable boot size, petrol consumption, etc so it's a usable day-to-day car.

They would probably take two of their cars that were targeting the same market (Eclipse and FTO) and come up with a single replacement car, maybe using one of the original names.

They would probably keep the car evolving over time and would release new models every few years. The replacement car would probably look something like this

The Eclipse was a replacement for the Eclipse! hardly an FTO replacement, that new model is massive, but admittedly it has cues from the FTO that aren't as obvious on paper.

As for 2 cars targeting the same market, the FTO was RHD only and the Eclipse was targetted at LHD markets, mostly US

I think it would be a Joint venture with another major car manufacturer..

Maybe one day we'll see a cross breed between say a mazda 121 or a fiesta and a gpx..

As far as I know FTO is built on the same chassis as the Mirage and the Lancer, so why not build an FTO on an Evo 5 chassis and make it a 4wd turbo. That would be a great drive! Of course keeping a 2wd in production as well.

A new FTO should be RWD, retain the V6 powerplant with a slightly increased capacity, say 2.8 with a 6 speed transmission, manual of course and an LSD. A full leather interior would be high on my wish list

I meant retaining the FTO's original lines just subtley updated i.e tailights and maybe doorhandles. a shark fin aerial like BMW's in place of the retractable which to be honest spoils the lines of the car when extended.
