Advice on touch up paint

Postby power » Thu Mar 11, 2010 1:59 pm

A few weeks ago, i scraped the back wheel arch with the garden gates! So i tried to touch it up with some matched spray paint from halfords,
now it looks even worse :(
The coulor doesn't seem to match 100%, and the texture feels like brail  I'm gonna get a new can from vinny byrnes as i think they'll be able to match it better!

So any advice on the correct way to apply this?
Do I still have to apply primer even if its red going on top of red?
Do I sand between each coat or just once at the start?
Do i apply laquer? ( I remember reading that fto's came unlaquered from factory)

Cheers for any help

Hi Power,

Trying to blend paint with touch up cans will never give a good result (especially halfrauds paint)
Bite the bullet and get a professional painter to do this small job in the correct environment.
May not be as expensive

Cheers gerry,
I'm currently saving away for a bodykit and full respray!
So i was really only trying my hand at it for a temporary fix! ( but hopefully a half decent one)
Now the good weather is here, i polished the car and it really shows up the bad job i did

after you apply the paint and let it dry for 48hours you may need to apply again to make sure it filled any scratch grooves etc.
after all that, let it harden for a week. then you can use a cutting compound to blend it.

so do i just sand down the arch, then prime with grey, then apply touch up paint, leave to dry and cut down with compound in a week?

Do i just use compound on the edges of the part i've touched up, or the whole lot?
Cheers mcgon

Touch up paint never really works. Even if the paint is the right colour, your car will be sun faded. Also the panel your spraying may have been resprayed before so it could be slightly off colour. I put a small mark on the back of my car there a while ago. I tried to spray it and made a balls of it. I thought the colour matched but it didn't. I used acetone (nail varnish remover) to remove the paint which I had applied. I tried it with a brush and that looked crap too. So then I tried spraying a bit of paint on a rag on my finger and gave the scratches a bit of a wipe. It toned down the scratches so it doesnt look to bad now. I got a quote of €120 to get the corner resprayed so I will get it done some time soon.

I was fixing a scuff on a mates bumper before and we just touched it up so all the scratch grooves were filled. let it dry and did the same again in a day or two.
after we had the scratches over filled (slightly raised etc) we left it for a week to fully harden then buffed back the whole area with some good compound to get a nice level finish. looked grand when done. How bad is your damage? if its very bad it might be worth getting it done professionally. No harm trying it yourself first though.

the original scratch was only small, but the area i sprayed kept getting bigger as i tried to blend it, and some slight overspray. I have some thinners in the shed so i think i'll take off the paint i've messed up and start from scratch! Cheers lads

if you cannot remove the overspray with thinners use good compound and it should come right off...
if its a small scratch, defo just fill the scratch over the course of a week until its raised. then cut it back with compound.

this is gonna sound a bit mad but i fit bathrooms and on occasion i have to repair adamaged bath which involves filling the chip or crack and then respraying the damaged area and blending the new paint in to the old white of the bath (whites are not all the same white if you get me) and a tasty little trick is this
first get your matched colour paint obviously
second fill any deep scratches or grooves with a good filler (if Nesseccesary)
then get a piece of card and cut or tear a hole approx 1 inch by 1 inch in the centre of the card and holding the can about 3 inchs from the hole spray through the hole on to the car it fathers the paint around the edges and helps the blend then leave it to dry and then when its fully dry and only fully dry 1500 grit wet and dry to flatten theen a liberal amount of tcut or similar to shine its the best possible way to blend paint diy stylee

Thanks for the advice, but when I went over the area with thinners in the end it took off all the bad touch up paint and the mark from the gate, and just left all the shiney factory paint unblemished! Pure luck!!

I fit bathrooms myself, and if I ever have to repair a bath I'll definetely try that

it works a treat on baths follow up with some clear lacquer on a bath though as coloured shower gels hair dye etc can stain the white but well done on the bit luck with your scratch
