To sell or NOT to sell

Postby Sebastian » Mon Feb 14, 2011 2:47 pm

That is the question every owner has from time to time

After a few years of ownership and a good few FTOs that were in my hands I have a good feeling that I want something non FTO related .
Of couse I have mixed feelings and it's wrong to ask a bunch of other FTO owners what they think but I got to a stage where I feel I have to move on .

Interesting.

At the moment you drive the van during the week and the fto is driven by her indoors,
If for example you got a mk4 gti 1.8T (can be got for handy money now)
She'd probably be just as happy driving it, it'd be less likely to be broken into, tax and insurance would be less, fuel consumption would be less, it'd be more practical, safer and newer.
You wouldn't get the same feeling looking out the window at it, and it wouldn't be as much a head turner.
I reckon if you sell the fto you'll get something less sporty.
Maybe if you had a track fto and a sensible fast car it wouldn't be so bad?

Inappropriate conversation for an fto forum though.....

what you looking for next is the big question i suppose?

If its an EVO or a Legnum Vr4 fair enough, if not i'd say you'd miss the FTO before too long, thats what happened to me when i sold the mivec for a cheaper to run car :(

Yeah, its a question we've all toyed over.
I've been without one for a while, but I'm always drawn back to them. Even with the silly insurance issues, Its very hard to see many cars out there that give that combination of looks, power and noise that the FTO delivers for similar money. If you have a bit more money to put into a car, then yes, there are other options out there that are great fun.
To be fair, no-one could argue with you for wanting a change for a bit, you've certainly been loyal to the brand! That being said, you've put a lot of time and effort to making the current black one your own machine, you will miss it!

Plenty out there to chose from so, would be hard to downgrade. No harm in a change once and a while.

I reckon you would miss her alright! But an rx-8 would be a lovely more modern upgrade! Going for great money at the moment too :D

Sorry but the RX-8 does nothing for me. RX-7 yes, different kettle of fish, but I see too many mid-life crisis people driving rex 8s and I'm not a huge fan of the styling either. But then again I'm a fan of the 90's Jap cars like the 300ZX, Supra, GTO, etc., so that sort of makes me biased.

X2 RX7 anyday over the RX8

Anyway if it were me i wouldn't loose the FTO Mivec unless it was for an Evo V RS Model, or the Legnum VR4 Estate, main problem is getting the right money for the FTO, ya never get back what you put into them unfortunately

Seb, you need to determine what it is you're looking for out of a car and what you'd be willing to live with if there are any potential downsides to one particular marque. After owning 3 FTOs, I know where you're coming from. In my case, I changed largely for functional reasons such as additional space requirements, economy and a lack of free space on the driveway. Sit down and look at your needs and budget before making any hard decisions. Everyone will have their own opinion but only you can decide...

EXACT same boat myself Seb...

My justification is I can get a more powerful car with a same or bigger engine that is cheaper to insure and gets better miles per gallon! Very hard to argue against any of that.
However..... everytime I clean and wax my car, and sit into it, and then just start it up... I know why I love it. It sounds great, it looks great, and there are not many of them, so when its clean its a real head turner.
It's lovely to drive too, and... its the most reliable car I have ever owned. 4 years and nothing... not a thing. a number plate bulb actually, thats it. Fair enough I looked after it well, and its been garaged since I had it,, but I did that with all my cars and still had random issues with my Ford and Alfa.. (no jokes please) The FTO has been bullet proof. The most important thing for me is the sound though. I'd need to go for a 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder car I think :) the V6 just sounds too good. Ultimately it will have to come down to running costs. :( I could pay them ok, but as I say, with petrol on the up (and 28mpg max)and insurance issues, its just really hard to justify the hassle. If the car got 35mpg or 40mpg I'd keep it for good.
