Problems with My GR

Postby TonyC » Mon Mar 03, 2008 3:08 pm

Folks,

My GR is very dear to me but it does present its problems from time to time. My knowledge of cars is limited to Make, Model, Colour and whether i think they look nice or not. The current outstanding issues are below, would apprecitate any advice you could offer.
1. Alternator seems to be gone, symptoms include car being unable to start and when it was driving the battery dropped pretty quickly.
2. Apparantly the front right brake calaper is gone. Symptoms here were the car brakes "went" on NCR dublin. I wasnt driving the car at the time so am relying on 2nd hand information which I am treating with suspicion. Anyway the car was taken to an Mitsubishi garage off oconnell street where the breakpads where changed and 200€ was taken from my wallet. Mechanic told me my break calaper was in need of replacement but i'd be ok for a while. Anyone know how long a "while" is or had similar problems?
3. No NCT, my car has no NCT. Tried to get this done a few times but NCT keep giving me forms to fill in which i am bad at doing. I take it NCT and FTO's dont get on too well?
4. Horn doesnt work, really all that is wrong here is the plastic plate that sits under the steering wheel that presses the horn has shattered. I'd like a new steering wheel anyway cos i'm bored of the standard one i have, any recommendations or places i could get one? Halfords dont have any anymore.
5. Headlights have that sort of yellow film on them, how do i get this off or is that impossible (it appears to be)

This should keep you all busy for a while- thanks for any help

Tony - these are all very common questions and all have been addressed in detail before.

Try using the search function:
1: "alternator"
2: "caliper"
3: check out the NCT section- FTOs mainly fail on emmisions but they're pretty good by and large especially considering the age of the car.
4: "Horn" - (Ignore any Gfalls or Bernard posts - thats a different type of horn  )
5: "Headlight peeling"

- If you still have any questions after that lot come back to us.

1.alternator gone (common problem apparently on FTO's)
2.you have PM
3.usualy they give u a list with the faults on the car .. if you fix them .. most of the tims the car passes .And Yes , sometimes FTO's and NCT are big enemyes
4.to get to the horn you have to take out your front bumper .
.post again for guides if you want to DIY . in most of the cases you can put a replecement horn from your local motor factors . if you think the wiring is faulty , get it to an electrician asap
5. peelin' ... defo a common problem .
i did mine twice and turned out grand . search for headlight peeling as Mf suggested . you will find some step by step guides .

good luck
