Potential Change on the cards

Postby RussMan » Sun Nov 04, 2007 6:43 pm

Hi All,

Just after some opinions on potentially changing motors.... again

I've been toying with the idea of a 6 Series BMW. Preferably a 645 but may consider the 630... research pending. A V8 would be sweet but i'd really be afraid of petrol costs running the 4.4 V8 or whatever it is..
Just wonder what people think of them. I personally love the looks and the luxury of them and could really do with an extra two seats. I've been finding more and more that i'm lost without the back seats when i have my sun in the car with me.
I do love the Z to drive, what a car... getting the back end out of shape is a breeze and its very forgiving.. Although the Traction control does my head in at times so tends to get switched off in the Dry.

Also going for a test drive in a 335 Petrol next week just waiting for a manual to be available.

Appreciate your comments,

Thanks
Russ

Why would you worry about petrol costs if you're thinking of spending 70K + on a car???

Seems like you're intent on getting a BMW - They're comfortable cars to drive and I guess a 6 series would have more status than a Zed but having said that a new 335i (they've only just come out) or a 6 series is serious money when compared to the Zed.

Personally I'd see it as a waste of money as I don't believe these cars to offer anything more significant than back seats and a badge for well over double the price of a Zed.

If I had 70K to spend on a car - then it'd be on an 05/06 Audi RS4 or a 02/03 Porsche 911. If it had to be BMW then it would have to be a 05 M5.

we had a 645ci convertible at work, the rear seats are a joke. Presume the coupe version is the same.

335ci is a very, very nice car - sounds great, handles great and pulls like a train.

But I'd have to agree with MfFTO - if I was spending 70k+ on a car I'd be looking for something that wouldn't have dropped 20K in a year - there are plenty of prestige options out there - E46 M3 (isn't there one living beside you?), E39 M5, a 993 or 996 911, Audi S4 or RS4 (B5 or B7)....

IMO, 645ci's are for old foggies who like the idea of a coupe/sports car but aren't up to driving a real sports car

Agree with MyF - the 6 is in a way different league to Zs and most sports cars on the road - this is up with Merc SLs and with a base of more than 108k you would want to have seriously deep pockets.

Can you imagine how much you'd go through to service one of these at a BMW dealer  whole different league.

I was talking to a mate of mine who works for Joe Duffy's - a standard service comes in around e650 so you can imagine what other bigger services come in at ...

As an aside - I asked him what I'd get as a trade-in on the TT against an E46 M3 - 15k is all they'd offer because it's not their brand  But then he told me about the real-world running costs - minor service is e800 & major service is e1500 and that's if nothing is wrong. He said they can be prone to breaking diffs and that would cost e10k+ - totally advised against getting an M and sugested if you were in the market for a fast E46 then the 330 was the way to go - off topic I know....

10k for a diff?? I think I'd be trawling the breakers yards to find one from a crashed one! Suprised to hear about this.... an E46 M3 was well up my list of post 911 motors... that really is surprising. I think the 330 is about 100 BHP less then the M3... so I wonder what the difference in real world performance would actually be? Sorry, off topic also

A 330 is miles away performance wise from an M3 and one of the things that sets them apart is sports items like the diff - an essential bit of kit on a serious sports car IMO. Couldn't imagine the Zed without one.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Thinking although the 6 Series looks great it might not be for me.
Major problem i have with the Z is the lack of rear seats and somewhere to put the wee fella... I've been thinking allot about what to get but its as you know, very difficult!

Another option for the next year or two might be a Porsche Cayenne, my friends father has the Cayenne T and 911 T (lucky b'satrd) so i might try get a test drive in one of them, obviously i wouldn't be going near a turbo, probably realistically the V6 3 litre might be an option.

I like the two S4's just dunno if they have the looks that i'm always after in a car

Any other thoughts appreciated,

Russ

Cayenne is a bit ugly... if I had that to spend on something with loads of room BMW X5 no question.

I was leaning this way recently too - I really like the TT but the lack of space is wearing on me and I never realised how used to back seats I had become.

Have a look at www.bmw-driver.net - you should get a lot of info there - the one thing I was told to bear in mind is that the E46 is a serious modern performance car (even more so than the E36) and as such you should expect running costs normally associated to such serious performance.

You're right - in outright terms the M3 is a long way ahead of the 330ci but having driven both an M3 and a 330ci m-sport the real world difference is not so apparent. They both sound great, they both handle great - it's only when pushed that the M3 comes into it's own. And tbh, lately, I find I rarely drive really hard - ususally I just hustle along at a reasonable pace which most cars could manage and it's only the rare time when I get some clear free motorway or read I know really well that I open up (and even that seems to be a very rare thing these days)...

For me the main attraction to the M3 would be the SMGII and the kudos...

I agree - the Cayenne is ugly as sin - the performance doesn't make up for it. If I was going SUV I'd look at a Range Rover Sport first followed by an X5.

I think that the Volvo or the Touareg are nicer than the X5 and even the sssssanyong is nicer than the Cayenne.

But I'd be looking for something lower to the ground so I'd be interested in a nice Audi.

But you can't beat a Range Rover.

All this talk ofr 4x4s is making me cringe...

Landrovers (old type) = Yesch
Pajero = Yesch

Even so I think they belong in places with no roads.. (Ok Pajero Evolution is an exception it's clearly a nutters 4x4)..

American 4x4s are just insane - they'll put any X5 or Sshedyoung to shame.. IMO..

No I don't intend to offend anybody who likes these beasts - if they were to make sense on any type of road surface the Irishroads would definately be the ones.

NOI!

All this talk of Beemers is making me cringe, if a BMW doesn't have an M badge, I find it very difficult to get excited about them. With some of the figures and models being bandied about the place, you're in a different league to the humble FTO. Russman, did you win the lotto or wha'?

:P That's what I was thinking.

6 Series or Cayennes are not the most likely replacements for an FTO
