Go online and do a quote out. Mine goes up every renewal and I just get one online, it works out a lot cheaper but you might not get it as low as the previous year. When you question it you'll get a speel about how its special rates for new online customers and as an existing customer you weren't given that rate etc, etc.mIts happened me every year for the last 4 or 5. Try it and see what you get

thanks karl. Will try that. It's actually a 64% increase in my policy. I think that crazy. I'm not paying over 1k this year. No way. 30 and 8years no claims on full irish. I'll sell the car if no other options.

That is a joke!!! But you know how it is. Recession times lead to higher premiums as has been the case until before now. Legally we should be allowed to get insured by any insurance company in the EU but alas that's not the case. I'd go to Polish or Latvian companies and get their proper insurance quotes of 2 or 300 Euro.

rang Quinn to find out was it a mistake. Obviously I know it wasnt, but wanted to hear what they had to say. The guy actually laughed at me when I said 64% increase is excessive. He then said "your not the only one, believe me" as if that somehow qualifies the price? PLANKS. that was it. Thats all he said. End of conversation.

AA - Cheapest quote was 1200 through AXA.
Britton - Need to send it off to an underwriter and will ring me back tomorrow.
Aviva - Not taking the FTO for new Business
O-Mally-Grfiin - Rang at 1215pm and she said she would be back to me before lunch. no reply from them. (just rang them now, no word, they said they will ring me when they hear back)
quoteme.ie 1200 via AXA
AXA directly - 1650euro

This car is practically uninsured for all intents and purposes.

ok I have a question for you.

I logged in and took off "open drive" off my policy. As it is my Partner is named on it, and so am I. I don't need it so any 25-70 year old can drive it. so I removed that and chose "named drivers only" anf the policy went from 1366 to 1019. still too much. I was thinking of just going for Third party fire and theft cover for 688euro.
Here is my reasoning.

I had a bumper replaced in 2007. my car was bought in mar 2007 for 10900euro, the incident happened in August so lets pretend the car was worth 9k in august 2007. The garage who fixed it asked me the value, and said that if the claim approaches 50% of the value of the car, the insurers often decide to write it off rather than fix it.
the bumper etc was probably about 3k for the full job, spray fitting etc. well under 50% value of car.
If I was to hit a wall today and need a new bumper and wing, or bumper and bonnet. It would almost CERTAINLY cost more than 50% of the market value of the car which must be about 5k now (???max?) so what am I paying fully comp for?
almost any incident will probably result in a write off.
The bumper job was 3k in 2007, and I was very lucky it didn't need a wing or a bonnet. can you imagine all 3?
I believe Mark had a similar experience with his RX7. they decided to write it off. mint car etc. so...
what to do?
1019 for fully comp
or
688 for TPFT (still too much in my opinion, but I have no other options)

advise and comments or criticism all welcomed and appreciated. thanks

that's terrible .
I'd try to push that more .From experience talking with the manager did help in the end in our case .
On another note my renewal was a few hundred euro cheaper so my bet is this is a lottery . :?

yeah dude. Im seriously pissed off. your man in Quinn just laughed at me... as if I was a clown for even asking why my policy jumped 64%.
It's hard to believe that Quinn seems to be the only place in the country to insure an FTO. And it seems they might not even be taking FTOs as new business.
Whats with this car lads. I'm sure I could insure somehting more powerful or even alot more dangerous ALOT cheaper.

Don't know about you guys but personally for a car of this value it has been 3rd party all the way for me for several years. I also choose the highest excess and that normally takes another 100-200 of the number. I generally do the same for home insurance to get good annual savings.

I agree Kace. I think if I crash the car or even needed just a new bumper or wing or bonnet etc, they would choose not to fix it as the repairs would be approaching the magical 50% of the value of the car.
However, I am a bit worried thay if I wrote the car off I get nothing. If I have fully comp at least I might get 3k or maybe even 4k and that would get me back into a position to buy a second hand car without needing
to spend a wedge of my own cash or get a loan. decisions decisions.

If I could even get Quinn to come down another 100euro I'd go with that. Although I can tell by talking to the chumps on the phone, there is no bargaining with them. Seb you were saying I should try tlak to a manager and try some bargaining. I suppose it would do no harm. tell them I have a quote wit setanta or some bullshit and do they want my business or not... haha

Oh dear!!! The regulator got back to me and said Quinn have revised my policy. It's risen to 1092. WTF? yesterday it was 1019 and that was valid for 1 month. I rang them, they said there is a note on my policy "no more changes, underwriters final". so thats it.
looks like 3rd party is the only way to go now.

.....and some of you asked before why I drive on yellow plates....

Just to hack you up:

Me: 30yo, 2 years NCB (Irish), foreign licence - 1006 pounds/~1150 euro fully comp.
You: 30yo, 8 years NCB, full irish licence - 1092 euro fully comprechensive

They quoted me 2780 euro for the same here in IE. That`s 130 euro more than I was paying 3 years ago for my old GR! Sick!

Also: Road tax:
Me: 180 pounds/200 euro per year
You: 640 euro

Even MOT is cheaper

If you can`t go through front doors - go through the back doors. But you win....

Mcgon only seing your insurance woes now. My advice would be GO TO A BROKER. For a left field niche performance car like the FTO, it is usually the best way to go. In particular 'direct' insurers -allianz direct, quinn direct etc, are completely inflexible, you are dealing with the monkey and not the organ grinder. They are the Ryanair of the insurance world. Might seem cheap, but offer no flexibility and leave you feeling cheap and neglected. Just not worth the time or cost of phone call, life is just too short. The brokers often have far much more flexibility, and are generally much smaller businesses so are interested in new business are not just trotting out the company line. It is often the case that insurance companies (when you are dealing with phone monkies) will not offer cover, but a broker can offer cover with that same company.
Get the phone book out and start ringing BROKERS.
In any case the inconsistency is rediculous, I remember ringing FBD (years ago), as few members here were insured with them. Rang up "we do not insure imports". Rang two days later got a differnt person on the phone, and he just gave me a quote, now he did qualify it by saying they'd have to check with their underwriters, but he didn't think it would be a problem.

The FTO has always been difficult to insure due to its hugely unwarranted excessive loading -this has been discussed ad infinitum so no need to thrash it out again here. Although I did think that this had eased somewhat in more recent years. The new difficulty that people will face on top of this is getting cover by virtue of the cars age. So in effect a double whammy. I think that once the car is over 10 years old it becomes difficult to insure.

On the level of cover. I think you'd be crazy to be paying fully comp on a car of that age and value, unless it only attracted a nominal additional premium.
