Common as muck.

Postby Daz » Wed Jun 08, 2005 6:05 pm

Just back from England, spent 2 weeks there, in Liverpool, i have to say thou that the fto has become as common as muck over there, i didn't really travel to to many places yet i saw at least 3 dozen fto's in that time, i gave up counting after 25.... i don't know weather it's a good thing as regards more cars easier to get parts as they become more common or a bad thing as it isn't as exclusive any more, with that small bit of mystery about them what do you think?

Hmmm

Good things:
- more plentiful, thus more people to ask questions of
- also likely to be more parts, mods, etc. available

bad things:
- I like having a car thats a bit rare, different, so more of them isn't good for that

The hamster spinning the wheel is worn out today so can't think of more than that.

I'm gonna vote 'Good thing', if this site and the community gets more support then that can only be a good thing! I'm over in Surrey at the moment, not one FTO to be seen but every second car on the road seems to be a Boxter or a Carrera 4, Porsches seem to be 2 a penny in this neck of the woods...

I do think more FTO's are hitting the roads over here but they're still pretty rare when compared to other performance cars. As usual I think it'll be a long while before the UK trend comes across the water (hopefully)....

Gotta agree with CJ on this one. I think its a good thing, more requirement for spares, therefore more availability, therefore lower cost ........................................hopefully :!:
They are still quite rare over here and we have the insurance companies to thank for that  , but if thats what it takes to keep the FTO a unique car to have on these shores then so be it.

I don't think FTO's will ever be very common - there were only 16,278 FTO's ever made (between 94 & 99/00). These are divided between Japan,Australia,New Zealand, South Africa, UK and Ireland. Its quite probable there are only around 12,000 of these cars worldwide on the road at the minute (write-offs etc) and that number is getting smaller every day - its not like theres a factory spitting out a few thousand a day at present.

The FTO is now getting to an age where it should start to be seen even less frequently - though there should be plenty of secondhand parts in the short-term as cars are taken off the road.

There are already far more RX8's on the road in Ireland than FTO's - and they're only out a couple of years.

Have to say though the Irish dealers seem to be starting back bringing in FTOs after years of not bothering as they were so hard to insure and hence sell.

I have to agree, it's nice to have a car that everyone stares at because they haven't seen it before - so it becoming more common is not so great IMO, except maybe parts wise.

I've only seen about 4-5 FTO's here in SA personally, and I don't see those numbers really increasing an time soon - so it'll probably always be a rare beauty here...

Hi Daz, Mike here. Not sure if u got my email at work yet, but i ended up getting a 1997 nissan200sx. Very fast and not many around . I voted that it was a bad thing that fto's where more common as

1/ That was the attraction for me when I got my GR manual in 2002
2/ There's not enough manuals to go roung any more
3/ I wont compromise on the car I am spending several 1000 euros on, a GR automatic doesn't cut it for me any more

Saying all that lads the fto is still ( for the cash ) the finesyt car money can buy up to 200 bhp front wheel drive. Dare say I will have one again one day

See u soon for a blast in Carlow mate

wow over half think its a bad thing............ i tend to agree to a certain extent, but i do see the other side of the coin as regards spares and after market parts but i liked the fact that it was so rare.
