GPX Air Mass ???

Postby vinny » Tue Jul 13, 2010 11:39 pm

Hello to every one as I have just bought my first FTO, its a 1995 GPX MIVEC with larger down pipes and stainless exhaust etc, It apparently has a chipped ecu, It has had an intake kit fitted, do these cars have an air mass meter?, I cannot see any evidence of one being fitted or any plugs hanging about except for a few on the passenger side bulkhead, the engine management light is not on, so I am hoping that these models did not an air mass meter, any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome along Vinny - would be interested in hearing more about your set-up particularly this "chipped ECU" you speak about - what model piggyback ECU is it?

Get some pics up if you can - we like pics of FTO's on here!

I will get some pics up as soon as I can, I was assured by the previous owner that it had a chipped ecu, not sure how to tell?, It has a fancy stainless system, and non standard downpipes and decat, It did have an 'induction kit' which looked like a siver K+N cone filter, lovely sound but absolutely crap otherwise, so I have removed it and jumped up and down on it!!, great for my anger management ;-). I may purchase a panel filter in the future. I have just bought some atf, forte treatment and a filter to do the box, and some engine oil and filter, just looking at a cambelt kit from camskill as well. It seems to have the obligatory leak on the offside rear rocker, I think i've read that its the cam carrier, so I may even have a go at that. The owner had it sat on his drive with a knackered alternator for months, it was overcharging badly, fitted a new alternator ( by only removing that and the bracket) and everything seems to be ok (I hope) apart from the off side central locking door mechanism, which I think was jammed rather than fried, so I will have to source one of those, Awesome site by the way, loads of info.

1) there is no obligatory leak.. that's fixable with proper gaskets :)
2) forte is useless.. as any treatment except engine flush
3) rest is solvable with a little of elbow grease :) and in case of the T belt with a extremely careful and experienced mechanic!
Don't rush on changing the T belt; just pop the plastic covers and inspect its state(don't base your assumption on what previous owner says to u)
There is in the workshop manual volume 2 a complete procedure of inspecting the belt.. and is very efficient!

If the rocker cover gasket is leaking, thats an easy fix - 1 hour tops. If the cam carrier seal is leaking then its a labour intensive job to fix, theres a fair bit of stripping down work required to reseal (liquid gasket used). Unless you're pretty competent with the spanners, I'd leave this job to an experienced mechanic.
