Dent Removal

Postby Kace » Mon May 19, 2008 9:50 pm

Looking for an easy way to remove a small dent.

Has anyone used those dent removal kits that stick something to the bodywork then use a kind of clamp to pull the piece stuck to the metal up, thus removing the dent ?

Think I saw them in Lidl a while back.

I have one no bigger than a fingerprint on the door, hardly noticeable until you're admiring a good polish

I'd have thought a bigger dent would be easier.

I'm based in Dublin near city centre and have a dent in the rear lower arch which was caused by a close encounter in a parking lot.

I know a mobile guy who does paintless dent removal, He's brilliant at it, can pass on his details if you're interested. If there aren't any sharp creases, or the paint isn't broken it can usually be fixed.

Liquid CO2 will remove most dents once there are no creases in the metal.

Anyone know where you can buy a can of liquid CO2 - seems like best bet may be an office supply place - air duster for computer keyboards ?

I use a CO2 extinguisher, and get it refilled once empty.
Computer supplies store may have it in small cans.

You can buy a can of freezing spray (can't remembver actual name) from Maplin. I tried it with limited / no success but it may work for you.

The spray you talk about CJ does not go to low enough temp. CO2 will go down to almost -80.

I'd well believe it Rory, I had limited success with it. That said, it most certainly froze the bejayus out of the panal and was recomended to me as a good alternative to presurised CO2

Ok - that sounds like a plan. Now - to find a 'cheap' small fire extinguisher !!

Remamber the dent has to be heated first, with a hair dryer or similar.

There's a few small dings on my doors that annoy me and I wouldn't mind giving this a go. I rang my mate earlier - he installs fire extinguishers for a living and said he has an old one he can give me :D

Is it really as simple as heating it for 30 secs to a minute with a hairdryer, then spraying the CO2 on?

Also, can this in any way damage the paint? I don't think I'd try it if there was the possibility of damaging the paint :S

Finally, do you do all this on the outside of the car, or do you need to remove the interior trim and do it on the inside of the panel?

Cheers

Checked the bottle last night, it will drop surface temperature to -50 deg - more than sufficient for the dent removal process. I should mention I tried using this process to remove a dent from the Galants drivers door last night without any luck. Heated the panal with a hairdtryer for 10 mins then went nuts with the spray - nothing!

Come on Steelroe - tell us how it's done. You appear to have used this method with success ?

I will not work on every dent. If there is a crease in the dent it will not work. I have tried it 3-4 times with good sucess.

CJ di you see ice forming on the panel when you sprayed on the Freezer spray?

In my case, there was a crease in the dent which might expplain why it didn't work.

@ Steelroe - Any chance you can give us a quick guide on what to do? I'll pick the CO2 extinguisher up from my mate tomorrow and give it a go over the weekend.
