Power Steering Squealing

Postby southerncomfort » Wed Apr 02, 2008 10:12 pm

Hi All,

I have a 96 GR that has developed a strange squealing noise coming from the engine when i try to turn the wheels with the engine on tick over.
When driving, the car is fine and no problems in the steering but when trying to park if the engine is just ticking over when i try to turn the wheel i get a loud squealing noise from the engine and the steering wheel is hard to move. If i have the revs up even a little then there is no problem until i hit full lock where the noise starts again.
I had a quick look under the bonnet and when the noise comes the wheel on the power steering pump slows down and i think the squeal is from the belt rubbing.
Now my knowledge is very limited so should i be looking for anything else causing this or would swapping the power steering pump sort the issue?
Or even better is there anything i can try to fix it without spending out on a new pump?

Sorry iuf this is a stupid question but im a total begginer at this stuff.

Many Thanks

your power steering pump belt is probably loose.

the wheel on the pump is turned by the belt which is turned by a wheel connected to the engine. if the belt is loose, then the wheel on the pump won't turn as fast as the belt is turning and you'll get a squeal. if you're not confident, get a mechanic to tighten it, get him to have a look at the tensioners and the condition of the A/C and Power steering belts. you should be able to turn the belt to a right angle if it's tnesioned correctly.
