Twin HID'S update

Postby Daz » Thu Nov 08, 2007 6:15 am

Was going to do this last night but got called to a job, so here it goes----->

Finally got round to fitting the Hids to both the Dips and Main beam, I am happy with the result but not ecstatic

The Dips

The Dips are what i'm just happy about, yes they do improve the lighting but they are not as bright as other cars
I have seen, I think that it is down to the frosted lenses (bulbus part directly in front of the lamp) Yes the purpose
for this lenses it to disperse the light and it does that well but I think it also stops a lot of the light getting thru
The reason I say this is due to the amount of light that the main beam is now throwing out. They use identical
Ballast packs and the lamp look identical also, and there is nothing on the boxes giving wattage ratings
The only difference is in some of the fittings (like when you try to put a main beam into the dips you have
To remove some of the plastic nibs to make them fit) other than that you could easily
Mix them up they are that identical

Main beam

Now the Main beam I am ecstatic about they are bloody awesome, it’s like it’s the middle of the day they are
That bright, as I have said they look identical to the dips and they are the same Kelvin rating aswell but the difference
Is amazing, if there is some difference between the lamps that I don’t know about I’d nearly get another set of
Main beam lamps and fit them to the dips (hummmm something I might try here when I’m next off maybe
Move one of the main beams into the dips and see if there is any difference????) But some how I doubt it

Now for the bad points or downsides (not many)

1) Not instant light, upon first switch on. And this is for both dips and main but more noticeable on the main beam
(due to the amount of light it throws out)but when the lights have been on for a min or so and you switch them off
then back on it is instant I think this is because they work better when hot.
2) As mentioned above not brilliant light from the dips but an improvement all the same.
3) Cabling not long enough so had to be cut and extended not what I wanted to do but couldn’t be helped
4) The routing of some of the cabling was a pain in the a$$ but that might be down to where I located the ballasts
5) Some of the connections are so bloody tight I struggled to get them to close together

Ok now to dispel a rumour about heat build up

The night of the day I fitted them I ended up doing an 11 hour drive all in the dark (7pm till 6am) so they got a
good run out, and after which I checked them out, yes the ballasts were on the warm side but not massively hot
I was expecting them to be a lot hotter after 11 hours of continuous use but pleasantly surprised.

Also after 11 hours of continuous use the outer lenses looks the same no burn spots or anything ok it was only
11 hours but it was 11 hours continuous which probably works our for several weeks maybe even a month
or two in some peoples cases

Pic’s

Yes I do have a few; I purposely went into the garage and went thru all my storage boxes to find my camera
To take a few pictures only for the batt to run out couldn’t find the charger as it’s still in the box and I didn’t
Find that so that also means they are still stuck on the camera as software is also in the box so can’t take them
Off as yet, so with the batt I only got a few pics but will take more and upload them when I have another
Look for the box when I next get a chance.

:smt024 Phew......

Yeah, my dad's volvo uses the same light for high beam and dips ...a motor either moves the lighting unit itself or a mirror when switching from dips to main headlights....

Thats not an issue for us thou, i think the problem lies with the lamps they just need a couple of seconds to get hot once there hot you can switch them on and off instantly

Nice one.... have HIDs on the dips at the mo, and want to do the full beams (if nothing else to have the same colour bulbs in both! ).

Must relocate to onto the lights I think , the passenger side one is velcro'd onto the battery surround.

I thought that, especially since i got the same kelvin rating for them both but while the main are pure bright white light there is a slight tinge of blue from the dips.

yea big headache with 4 ballast packs to fit in the engine bay but i managed it thou 2 are techanically not in the bay more behind the bumper i'd say. :D
