have a look at the import guide on this site, ul see da link on da left of da homepage.

when the car lands u have to pay 10% customs on the total price you paid for the car in japan (including shipping etc) then 21% VAT on da running total. Add your VRT and ur done.

I did this a few months ago too. its a very complicated situation, and you really have to be there when they take the car off the boat. or else its left in the yard with the keys in it and stuff can get fleeced. Also if no one is there and the car wont start (after being on a boat for 6 weeks) it could be taken off with a forklift, (not good). You're better off getting someone to do the paperwork and sort it all out for you, less hassle and they know what they're doing. I thought I had everything researched thoroughly but nothing like experience to do it properly!

You have to pay the receiving shipment company a few quid to get the car unloaded anyway afaik, and you can arrange for other guys to lock the car and make sure its secure.

They're well used to cars coming over having been sitting on a boat for a few weeks so it shouldn't be a problem. Mine was sitting in Japan for about 5 months before getting on the boat, and they just started it with a mobile jump starter.
