Jacking the FTO

OK guys – someone help me out here. Many of you will be aware of the FTO jacking points at either end of the car in the middle and then the 4 chassis points along the side of the car.

Can someone enlighten me as to how best to jack up and support the car using the side chassis jack points, without letting the whole car sit up on the ledge of metal at these jacking points. From what I can see the best thing to have here would be a piece of rubber or strong wood with a slit in it, that can support the whole weight of the car. These would then sit on top of either your trolley jack or your axle stands.

I was trying to do a job at the weekend which involved jacking up the car and I couldn’t come up with a good way of using the axle stands on these ledges. How does everyone else do it ? I think I saw some people talking about using an ice hockey puck with a slit cut out of it or something like that. This would be great if I had some ice hockey pucks !!!

Any advice / experience on doing this much appreciated !!!

I often wonder myself. Part one of the workshop manual (page 27 - 31) covers lifting and supporting of the car, it has a dimensions/drawings of wooden blocks for use with "H-bar lifts" - it may be useful. Really like your suggestion with hockey pucks!

Had a good chat with the NCT guy - he really liked the car and everything was good (nearly). Failed on bloody emissions ! It passed last year so not sure what has happened.

I don't think it's the CAT, so I will do the blink test to see if anything is showing up and then if not I will seek replacement (even secondhand):

- Air intake sensor
- Engine Coolant sensor
- Lambda Sensor (again)

If anyone has any of these laying around please let me know.

I usually find that a proper run to really heat the cat does the job. I had the same issue with a lambda replacement at Paul's nolans. It failed until I really ran her to the Nct centre, watching the temp gauge go right up to 70%

It should have been well warm enough before I got there. My Lambda was only marginally out so this could point to exhaust pinhole which is possible.

However CO2 was though the roof, which points to a sensor - Gerry saw this before.

Anyway blink test first tonight and I'll see if that tells me anything.

Yea sounds like air intake sensor.
Code for this if I remember correctly is 62.

Also try taking negative lead off battery
For 10 mins then reconnect and
Blink test again.
This has worked for me in the past.
Code didn't reappear, retested car and
It passed!
Seems to take code a long time to generate
After its cleared.

If it comes back straight away ya have genuine problem with air intake sensor

Good point Ger - another trick of the trade - I like it - a fix with no cost or effort !!

I will do this later to confirm whether there is an issue with the sensor or not. I have been trying to source one of these - no joy yet.

Does anyone know whether this part is present on a GR / GX also - I don't think that it is, so hence I need to locate a GPX donor (if I need the part).

You can never have too many alternators, CATs, Lambda sensors for your FTO !!!
