Broken Exhaust question

Postby pergau » Sun May 07, 2006 10:34 pm

My exhaust has cracked near the back and apart from the wonderful sound, I suppose I need to get it fixed.

I'm not sure what bit it is - It's the the part that bulges, nearest to the CAT. I don't really want to put in a performance system so what are my options for getting it fixed and where can I get it done in Dublin?

Hmm - you say its near the back but then mention its the part nearest the cat? What side of the CAT is it on - the engine or the backbox?

Good question, it's the bit that bulges that is nearest to the Backbox. It's about the same distance from the engine as the handle of the passanger's door.

thanks

Then its on the centre section - I imagine its one of the resonators on the centre section - Is the crack on the actual pipe or is it a crack in the weld?

I presume its the original exhaust thats on the car - If so theres probably not much life left in the centre section in any case. A lot of guys have changed their exhaust to an aftermarket one and have spare centre sections - I sold my orig centre section last year when I changed my exhaust. Maybe put up a wanted post on the for sale section.

Its very difficult to say whether the centre section is repairable or worth repairing without looking at the crack - take it along to a reputable exhaust centre and see what they have to say - but you will be better off replacing the centre section than having a bodge job done that will get you by for a while.

Mine broke a while back in what sounds to be a similar position http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3303
It broke where the pipe coming from the back box goes into some sort of silencer, on it's way forward towards the CAT. It is the middle section you're looking for if it is the same. I shopped around looking for a used part but had no joy. I was told I could get a genuine Mitsi part for around 400 yoyos  . Ended up getting a full stainless mongoose exhaust inc a decat pipe. Cost 40 quid to get it installed in the exhaust/tire shop in Celbridge. Haven't looked back since. Overall inc fitting the whole thing cost around 490 Euro (as far as I can remember). I reckon it's much better value then 400 for a standard middle section.
By the way I know I asked before but when my CAT was taken out I couldn't remove the sensor that screws directly into the CAT. Still driving round with a blankoff stuck in the Decat. Does anyone have a spare used or new sensor by any chance?

Thanks for the help Colin and MFFTO - It seems to be the Middle section as you indicated.

The Crack is in the middle of the bulgy bit so I don't know how easy it would be to get it welded. I'm thinking of getting a roll of Exhaust repair tape as you couldn't fit a flexi-hose over it without either disconnecting one of the joints or waiting for it to crack through. Do people have any opinions on this?

I'll put a message in the "For Sale" section and see if anyone has a bit going and I'll PM steelroe.

I have "Green guilt" Vs "extra power" issues with going for a mongoose with a decat pipe and it seems to be a bit silly to fit a mongoose to a cat. Also, I think that you'd need some way of lifting the car if you fitted and decat and then had to refit the cat for the NCT
Also I'd rather not spend a lot on the car at the moment as I'll have the get the Aircon done and that will be a few hundred as it needs more than regassing. Although, I suppose, that I'll have to fix the exhaust whereas I could do without the Aircon (and it would be greener).
