Is there any guides on the web on how to remove the alternator?

Common consensus on both UK and AUS forums is that the easiest way to remove the alternator is to drop the exhaust to get at it. Don't really know of any guide avail.

Hi Keith,

Don't know if you've already removed the alternator, but I have had to do it several times over the past few months. The first two times were a horror (4 hours out and 4 hrs back in each time :cry: ), but the last time the trick was learned (45 mins out :lol: ). The following is the sequence, some of the technical names escape me;

1. Loosen the centre bolt of the drivers front wheel (and the wheel nuts),
2. Jack the car from standard postion and remove centre bolt and wheel,
3. Loosen and take off alternator belt,
4. Drain Gearbox oil & disconnect the drive shaft and remove to safety,
5. Prop the standard jack position and place the jack on something solid under the engine,
6. Take off top drivers side engine mount,
7. Jack engine (should fall forward slightly - check aircon pipes, radiator and wires),
8. Disconnect wires and take off alternator bolts (careful, if it falls, could loose a finger or two),
9. Jacking the engine up and down slightly should provide some play to get the alternator out,
10. :D

Putting it back in is pretty much the same in reverse.

Do you have a problem with the alternator? What wrong? I am having terrible trouble with it mine, the volt meter in the car goes nuts, over-charging etc. Got the alternator reconditioned, but the guy who did it thought it was in good nick, put it in the car and drove it for about a month and one day the volt meter when nuts again. It's happened three times now but I'm holding out for a solution as the alternator new from the dealer is c.€1k. Reconditioning is only €80.00 and I think €80 more for a new regulator. They don't think the regulator is the problem though.

Alternator only seemed to give trouble when I hit a bad bump in the road, which suggests it could be a wiring problem with wires sending the wrong signals to the alternator or shorting somewhere. Does anyone know if the alternator is similar to any other toyota, nissan??. The FTO alternator is 2 pin and I know the Galant's after 97 are four pin but generally the same.

Got a good price (I think) on tappets and a pulley from a place in Engineering Co. in Cork, €580+VAT. Will post the details later.

I have a '94 silver auto/tip GR with 17" 5 spoke chrome alloys. Bought it before Christmas, but have been wanting one for ages, had to wait for the insurance to get reasonable. I think it has had a tough life, its a bit of a Monday car. It's off the road at the moment, need to sort the alternator, suspension, idling and I'd say there's an issue with the oil pressure.

Lots of work to be done but it will be worth it. Have been reviewing your excellent site for some solutions and common problems since I got the car.

I have only ever driven Mitsubishi, when they are right, they are the best. Have a Galant also which had a similar oil pressure issue with the oil light flashing when at low idle speed. That needed the bearings done, wasn't too bad cost/time, now perfect. Hope the FTO will have simple solution in that department too.

Ya Mustang, your right there, they didn't even know what the correct auto box oil is for a Galant. Tried them on a few things and but wouldn't bother anymore. I found Murphy Mits Motors in Barraduff, Killarney are more helpful.

Cheers mitsinut, left it in to an autoelect this morning who said he would take it out. I'd be too afraid i would do more damage trying it.
