code for replacement door key?

Postby russdfc » Thu May 13, 2010 9:21 pm

hi everyone ive had my fto for three years now and just recently found out i dont have a key for the door very frustrating when you start work at 5am and the key fob wont work as happened yesterday. someone told me the code for the door key is etched on the one of the windows/windscreen. is this right or would the lock barrel have the code on it . any help would be appreciated. managed to fix the key fob but as i have only one would prefer to have a key too.

thanks in advance russdfc

Not sure about where the key code is located. But I thought I should point out that I think it is unusal that the key will start the car but not open the door. I have had two FTO's and both the main key and the spare key would work in the door and ignition on both of them. It may well be the case that some of your locks were replaced at some point meaning any code on the car could potentionally be wrong.
I could be wrong but its something to consider as car keys are usually expensive and it would be a pain if you ended up with two keys that woudn't work in the door.
On that note if anyone needs a replacement key, there is a guy in edenderry that does them cheap. My sis's fella was quoted €100+ for a key for his sir civic from honda and got it for €40.

FTO keys can be had for 7 euro in most places.
FTO keys don't have immobiliser chips in them so are very cheap (cheap as chips I suppose)

Your best option is replacing the lock and barrel set. Camskill do them. or the likes of Steelroe or Gerry may have a full set of second hand locks you could use.

thanks for your replys, yes i thought it would be a bit strange to have the code for a key etched on the windows. you could be right in saying they might have been changed or another theory i have been told is they have simply ceased up due to not being used, either way i need one so thanks for the advise will check out camskill

hi all, recieved the locks today and fitted the drivers side tonight as that unlocks the passenger door too with the central locking and all is well. just to let other people know the barrel is stamped with the same code as is stamped on the key. gonna persivere with wd40 and other stuff see if i can free off the original locks so i just have the one key instead of two but all in all well chuffed only took half an hour to change.
