I rang them today, looking for a set of Toyos and they were insistent that they weren't that good in the wet! and gave bad mileage (agreed) so they suggested Verdestiens (you know what I mean) or Goodyear F1s for around 145 a corner

What do you think? I was fairly sure about the Toyos and I'm willing to put a lot of money into a good set of tyres!

I was just talking to Rob about some tyres - great guy, had a great chat with him about what the best tyre would be to go with. I think I'll probably go with the Vredestein Ultrac's - Rob can do them at 190 a corner, yeeeks - I got a quote of 160 for F1's from a guy in Drogheda....

I'm getting 2 F1's fitted on Saturday up in Drogheda for 160 a tyre - said he'd do them for 180 a tyre for anyone else. Am thinking about getting 2 vredestein ultracs fitted by Rob so I can compare the difference...... is that stupid?

Not sure I know what you mean - are you saying one make on the front and one make on the back - how can you make a comparison on that?

Or are you saying you will swop around both sets and see if theres any difference.

I would imagine you are far better off with the same set on all 4 wheels.

Exactly that....

When pushed hard the golf tends to understeer and with the remap wheelspin can be an issue so I was gonna play around with the fronts and see how each brand faired on the front wheels

I would imagine you are far better off with the same set on all 4 wheels.

I know you're probably right here - just a pie in the sky idea after I heard about some guys who deliberately fitted less grippy tyres on the back to provoke over steer in fwd cars.... silly I know but interesting what people get up to...

CJ are you expecting Rob to come back with a discount % for these tyres for the FTO club in the near future ? Reason I ask is I'm due for 2 new shoes and I'm wondering whether I should wait for this to come through or just go ahead ?

I talked to Rob last week about getting some tyres, he quoted me 210 euro for F1's and 190 euro for Vredestein Ultracs - that was for some 225/40x18.

I ended up getting a better quote from a place in Drogheda - Sean McManus Tyres - 180 euro each for F1's. Check out ->

CJ - any response to previous Q re expected discounts from these guys ?

Also - is their alignment equipment the same or as good as the system in Dave McCann's place ?

He never got back to me on specific brand discounts, I think that he was looking to see what brands we were after ti be honest. I'm assuming that the discounts listed on the discount card applies.

I'm no expert but I'd say that their kit is better. For a start, the machine is newer and the brand name (Corghi) is well recognised in the business from what I've heard.

Kace, pay 'em a visit the next time you're out this direction, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to show you around.

I'm a little confused!

I haven't been out there yet but I probably will be in the next few days. Are you saying that we should go to Discoun Tyre and Auto for the tyres and then to Dave MCanns (I presume that its in the same estate) for the alignment?

No, both DTAS or Dave McCann do tyres and alignment, I'd be inclined to support DTAS as they've offered us a discount, that said, members have had good experiences with Dave McCann in the past, its a matter of choice really.

Here goes:

Coming from the M50 towards Blanchardstown on the N3, go thru 'Scotts Roundabout and take the first exit off mark Blanchardstown. Take the right turn at the top of the ramp, there should be a sign for 'Snugboro'. Go straight up the Snugboro Road, thru a small roundabout, keep heading up the road for another 1km or so until you hit a T-junction, at that stage, take a right. Take the next left in Rosemount Business Park, you'll see DTAS on the LHS once you come thru the gates.

Remember to mention FTO-Iraland to avail of your discount ;)

Got sorted with some new shoes and 4 wheel laser alignment at DTAS at the weekend. Great service, good attitude from Rob (the owner) who took great pleasure in explaining all aspects of the system to me.

One thing I didn't realise was that his operation is only 4 months old. Highly recommend the service and will be keeping my business with him.

He also mentioned that he is holding an opening in a few months time where he will have some of the major manufacturers there with some interesting kit from the UK, e.g. a simulator perhaps. He was interested in the FTO-Ireland club members coming along to show support - sounds like a good idea for a Summer meet !

Works for me, you can get Rob on his mobile at 086-8098542 if you're still having problems, I would ring to be on the safe side.

Just saw this - stayed with the Dunlop SP Sport 9000 - I have found these to be excellent, seem to be stock tyre on many BMW 5 Series and SL 500.

I got my tyres off a guy in ardee, east coast alloys. I found him very reasonable as i got my tyres for €85 each, the local fella said €110 for the same tyre. Not the best tyre's ever there wan lee 215 45 17, but i was outa work at the time and they were the best i could get. I think they are good but then again i've never driven on the f1's. He's also very good for alloy's. Got my lenso 17's for €950 when they should have been €1180. He also does kits and things aswell. I'd recommend giving them a call, even if it is a bit outa the way might be worth it
