Postby steelroe » Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:58 pm

According to info on this link the 1.8 GS engine was also fitted to the early model Volvo S40 in Japan.

IIRC, the 4G93 block was used in quite a few Mitsi's including the GS and a few EVOs, never heard of it being used in a Volvo though....

that's true, they used both Renault and Mitsu 1.8 engines, can be differentiated by 1.8 or 1.8i badges on the back.

the S40 was GDI, so it isn't exactly the same as the FTO engine, the block is the same AFAIK.
it was added to the existing 1.8 model around 2 years into production

The Mitsubishi engined S40 will have 1.8i on the boot as opposed to 1.8, it'll also have GDI written on the rocker cover.

The timing belt on the 1.8i is a pain to do, so incase you're loking at one make sure it's done.

both were available from 98 onwards. Renault engine only option from 96-98,

the GDI is 125bhp and a good bit more lively and economical than the Renault version, as far as I remember, the Renault engine was around 110bhp (probably the one from the 1st gen Laguna)

I presume you know the S40 and the Carisma shared a platform.
