Brake warning light

Postby kevinod » Mon Sep 27, 2004 10:39 am

Guys,

the brake warning light has started coming on just lately, the handbrake light on the dash. It doesn't seem to come on every time, but it's either on from when i start the car and stays on, or goes off as soon as I release the handbrake.

Anyone any ideas what might be causing it? I'm kinda hoping dodgy handbrake light switch but could be more serious... brakes working fine, haven't noticed any degradation in braking at all.

Kevin, check this post for possible causes.

Kev,
There is generally a level detector in the brake fluid reservoir. If the fluid level is low the brake light will come on. Typically you would tend to notice this under sharp acceleration/ braking/ cornering .i.e. when the fluid level is being disturbed. I would check the fluid level, top up if necessary. I'm not sure if the level detector can be seen/ easily accessed when you remove the reservoir cap (maybe someone else here can advise) but if you can access it make sure it's not stuck or fouled in any way.
This is only a suggestion...but I think a failed switch is unlikely.

Cool, hopefully its either low fluid or low pads... Thanks guys!

Thought fluid wasn't too bad when I checked it last, and thought pads needed to be replaced in a few months but worth replacing now for the sake of it I guess.

Think I'll replace the brake fluid altogether, dunno how long the existing stuff is there.

Didn't know the FTO had sensors for either of those, cool! Out of curiousity, anyone know how the brake pad sensors work? Didn't see any leads going to the pads when I replaced that bolt on the left front wheel. Now that I think of it I wonder did I disturb something there that's causing the light to come on...

Anyway, merci buckets!

AFAIK there are no brake pad sensors - you just get squeal when the pads are low
