poxy bumper bolts!!!

Postby paul2508 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 7:21 pm

im really really geting pee'd off now. im trying to take off the front bumper off the fto im breaking ,two of the four bolts underneath the car holding it on just wont budge, i got the two off the passenger side of the car,but the two on the drivers side are are a pain, anyone have this problem?? i tried a socket on it, no joy,i only had it jacked up one side so had little room.my arms are cut to bits over slipping so many times. do i put it up on axle stands for more room and keep going at it??? the bolts are starting to round off due to the socket slipping on it. ottostreet is waiting for me to take it off for him and im running out of patience.

please help!!

Get axle stands under there straight away, hanging out of a bolt with a jack for support is asking for trouble. Any time I've removed bumper bolts, they've come off easily enough. Invest in a torque wrench for these type of jobs.

Are you using the right size socket should be a tight fit if the socket your using is a loose fit try the next size down and give it a little tap with a hammer to get it on the position of the bolts mean they pick up a lot of sh1te and the right size socket might just seem to small and if this fails and the bolts are just to tight you can heat them with a small blow torch and as the metal expands and the cools through heating and the rapid cooling( chuck some water on them to cool them quickly) it will free them up alowing you to undo them

Mine came off no bother with no slipping of the ratchet. It must be a wrong sized socket you have in or else the bolt is after becoming rounded, if thats the case then its going to be a right pain to get them off. Jack it up from the centre of the bumper and put tyres under the skirting or axle stands, its a lot harder if its one side jacked. Theres a jacking point in the centre of the car, you'll need a bit of strong timber on the jack to support the point as its got 2 bolts heads sticking down and the trolley jack wont hold it safely.

its probably the extension im using to with the socket its not long enough to come to past the plastics cover guards. i have no room to get a good grip of the rachet. im using a 12 mm socket piece , might try what eamo said get the next size down and tap it on plus use the axle stands so ill have more room to play with. third time lucky tomorrow. let ya all know how i got on.thanks

Jaysus...defo use axle stands!

I narly got myself flattened once I was mucking about the the exhaust.. the FTO is fairly lightweigh, but there's no way it wont squish you like a bug if you're caught under it..

I think a set is 30e or so in Halfrauds, you can prolly get better & cheaper ones in a motorfactors.

as for the bumper bolts mine came off handy enough the last time as well but you need the long extenderbar and a good bit of space to flail your arms about..

If you gave him the bulb holders and the connections , that't really it . I found it very difficult when I upgraded mine to get the connectors . pain
