Tappets anyone?

Postby padidas » Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:44 pm

Howdy again folks..

just wandering if anyone knows of anyone in the south dub area who'd change the tappets in my FTO for me?

also im going to order the tappets from Camskill.. 310euro including delivery and VAT. Is this the best possible price?? is there anywhere else I can look for them? as i'm aware its a tough job to do and therefore i'll be charged a lot for labour...

thanks again,

Paul Nolan is your only man.

Tried this Pad?

http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... php?t=6683

Mitsi themselves recommend the process in a couple of workshop manuals.

Did I hear Paul wanted €1,000 from someone to do them?

a thousand??

ehhh... no

i'd rather pay my mate who's a mechanic to try and do them, (even though he's never changed tappets before), hell i'd try and do them myself instead.

was thinking of trying out the revving idea.. only thing is the tappets are noisy at ALL times? does that mean that there's no air lock and that the tappets are shagged regardless?

phew.

FTO's are just as expensive as i'd imagined they would be to get to any kind of high standard...

I fitted a set recently for just over 300.
It is not a hard job to do if one is any way mechanically minded.

Pad, I suggest you give Paul a call to get a price on the labour, I find it hard to believe that he woiuld charge a grand. Of course you could head down to steelroe (Kerry) but give Paul the benefit of the doubt first.

If you havn't dealt with Paul before, tell him you got his name off the owners club.

What bit did you need Seb, other than the the 24 lifters and maybe some gasket sealant for the corners of the rocker gasket.

If you were doing the fob yourself toolls needed ar short prybar, strong flat blade screwdriver and of course a magnetic retreiver.

Pad, are the tappets noisey all the time or just when the engine is cold?

If mainly from cold, try the process in the link above. (channels blocked, try my link above to clear the noise - it works).

If noisy all the time then most likely are worn and could do with being replaced.

The VR-4 got very tappety of late (similar lifters to the GR), after it was driven hard on track for a period of time, the noise completely disappeared.

Suggest you undertake the 'quietening' procedure. Tappet noise on the VR-4 would crop up occasionally when warm but was most prominent from cold.

If your prepared to get them done in balbriggan (north county dublin) I think Glen at Glen Tyres would give u a better price than that. He adjusted my tappets recently for me and has done timing belts and all the other works on my FTO. no harm asking him for a price, you might be surprised. 01-8412099 ask for glen and tell him neil at the club put you in touch.

attempted the "revving to 3 thousand a million times" idea...

seemed like it might have worked at the beginning, tappets quieten at about 2 and a half thousand while revving up slowly.. but no matter how many times i tried (wait fifteen seconds, and start to rev slowly to three again) they stayed tapping away up to two and a half...

im assuming this means go and order the new tappets from camskill... :(

any idea on how long i have to wait for delivery?

2 days, 3 days max I would think. Camskill are very very fast shippers and will have them out the same day!

good stuff!

i've ordered them anyway.. i'll let you know how long im waiting...

now all thats left is to find someone willing to fit them with a bit of experience...

i've heard before that there's "no guarantee" that changing them will work perfectly...

Either way... that noise is wrecking my head... and piece by piece... the car's getting back to a reasonable condition.

Let us know who comes in most competitive.

Personally, I'd go for PaulN just for peace of mind.

yeah I'd be interested to see what the variance is in prices to get it done.
if you do ring glen for a price mention you were referred from here. he has done plenty of work for me and did some work for Mark too when he had his FTO.
