Air Con Probs

Postby RussMan » Tue Jul 19, 2005 11:12 am

Hi there,

Just noticed the other day that my air con only appears to blow at notch 3 & 4 now. I'm trying to recall as to whether it worked on 1 & 2 previously and im pretty sure it did. Does anyone know the technicalities with this switch... i.e possible dry joint etc?

Thks

I had a similar problem with my Xsara, was a common fault apparently with them. In that case it was a resistor that I had to replace (twice in the 4 years I owned her). Wasn't expensive, 22 quid for the part and fitted it myself on the Xsara.

Maybe its something similar for the FTO?

You're one of the few people out there with manual aircom Russ, so it might be difficult to get a comparison. I assume that the airflow on settings 1 and 2 is quite low, is that what you're referring to? If you turn off the a/c and blow air in from the outside, is the issue the same? I suggest you remove the recirculating motor at the drivers footwell and give it a good clean, the fins might be full of dirt and slowing down the circulation process. Its a very easy process, just remove the power connector plug and undo the four screws, it'll take you less than 5 mins to remove. Alternatively, there may be a loose air duct somewhere, the only way to check this outy is to remove the glovebox, the lower centre console, the stereo and the side vents on the dash, turn on the a/c and see if you can hear\feel air being expelled behind the dash.

Russman,
Your's is a GPvR correct? So the a/c unit is different than on standard cars.
I'm pretty sure (someone correct me if I'm wrong), that on the FTO there are sperate relays for the 'low' and 'high' fan speeds. In which case possibly the 'low' relay is gone /loose connection. I think the relays are actually located in the passanger foot well. Check the manuals!

Russman,
Like CJ said. Just using the blower (fan), with a/c (cooling) turned off. If this problem persists then It's likely you have a problem with the blower circuit.
Quoting from the workshop manual

If the blower does not operate in any mode other than the HI setting, the cause is probably a malfunction of the of the power transistor system
Probable cause:
Malfunction of power transistor.
Malfunction of connector or harness.
Malfunction of AC-ECU

Personnaly I think malfunction of the AC-ECU is highly unlikely.
If however (with the vehicle stationary) and a/c on, this problem exists, but you then get cold air at low setting while driving, then the problem is likely with the condenser fan.

Thanks Lads. Yeh mines the gpvr.
If i have the air con on settings 1 or 2 i get no flow then on 3 get blasted!!
When the car is in motion and the air con is switched to on postion with either setting 1 or 2 i get a cold breeze through the vents. I'll take a look at the air con box in the passenger footwell tonight and let you know,

Cheers
