Clever old INVECS-II

Postby CJ » Fri Nov 03, 2006 3:42 pm

Traffic around my corner of West Dublin is a disaster most days - during the week I'm mostly stuck in traffic. With the Rex in the driveway, I tend to use the FTO less for wide open throttle driving during the weekend (who wouldn't?!)
The clever INVECS-II system in the tip box has caught onto this - originally I thought that I was developing a gearbox problem due to a noticable lack of torque but it works out that INVECS-II has impacted on the change up / down point dramactically as a result of my sedentary weekday driving. As soon as I'm over 30kph, its it in 4th gear. I've driven the FTO in the same fashion for a few years up until recently - its only now I can appreciete how clever the old INVECS-II system actually is.

It caught me off guard too one day, but I was at the opposite extreme
Following a spot of very spirited driving I got stuck behind another car, so I eased off. I was in 3rd, normally it would flick straight up into 5th, but it stayed in 3rd at high revs (ready to race). There I was getting worried that the gearbox was sticking in 3rd. But after a while it changed. I was worried at first but when I realised it was the invecs I was quite impressed :smt023

I had that about a week ago, the gear box dropping to third at 65MPH during some very spirited driving. It's pretty cool, isn't it?

Thats sounds like a bit of crack...

My gear box tends to just stay in whatever gear I stick it in..

Oh wait - I drive a manual ;-)

All you manual owners living in suburbia don't know what you're missing - the tip is a huge bonus for me bearing in mind Dublin traffic! Me clutch boot would be hangin' off me if I were driving a manual on a day to day basis. Up Tip!

The fine art of driving without driving.
If I don't want to be flicking through gears I'll take the bus (just like ordinary people)

Everyone to their own, I can only assume that traffic congestion isn't an issue down in the Sunny South East baldtyres? Otherwise you'd sympathise with us surbubanites who want to look good stuck in traffic and reap the benefits of clutcheless motoring in stop \ start driving conditions 8) When it comes to driving around town, you can't beat an auto, plain and simple. If you're out in some far flung corner of the country then a manual would be the preferred weapon of choice.

Agreed, Nothing down here like the level of traffic in Dublin even in Rush Hour. I spent 2 years in Start Stop traffic every morning & evening along the Grand Canal, and hours getting into and out of Dublin some weekends and will never do it again. Did the same in London and other cities for a long time.
I have on a couple of occations hired auto SUV's on holidays and loved the laziness of not changing gears in traffic, but my FTO has to be a manual.

Aye yeah my clutch went just shortly after I started working in sandyford - it just couldn't hack the m50 car-park situation...

Now that I'm back to flying through the bogs the manual is lovely though :-)

As CJ says sitting in traffic - Auto/Tip would definately be awesome... especially if you don't want to have disproportionate legs.. (Big muscly clutch leg - wussy wee accelerator leg)

Not to mention the fact that left foot breaking would be much easier in a tip

You know thay you can learn your tip tronic gearbox when to change the gear? Just switch to tip tronic mode and drive a day or two. then switch back on auto and you`ll see the difference. But this INVECS II is pretty annoying somethimes ha?
