Postby kenkeo » Sun Apr 20, 2008 8:23 pm

lads was wondering did anyone have a problem with your car sliding on the original tyres. i have the original wheels and tyres that came from japan and find the the wheels are spinning excessively and car is sliding in the wet even at low speed. not sure if its the tyres or size of wheels?

think it's the tyres, We imported a Corolla from Japan in 99 and the tyres were very bad, looked perished. what brand are yours?

I'd say it could be the tyres, see below.

Q. I heard that the FTO is brought over from Japan with poor tyres...?
A. In most cases, yes cars have come from Japan with a lower quality tyre fitted, often "Q Rated" (see below). This can have an adverse effect on handling, road noise and braking. If you have some of these tyres fitted I recommend changing them as soon as possible.
Speed / Tyre rating table
Speed Symbol Max. Speed MPH Max. Speed KMH
N 87 140
P 93 150
Q 99 160
R 106 170
S 112 180
T 118 190
H 130 210
V 149 240
W 168 270
Y 186 300
ZR 149+ 240

I've Goodyear F1s on mine and find them great.

I've the new asymetric Goodyear F1s, but the front wheels seem to have a lot of wear for not huge mileage. I'm not a hard driver by any means, so I'm wondering if these new asymmetrics are just poor wearing...

I'm glad you posted, I need two tyres and was thinking of getting those.
I might just stick with the standard F1s.

Kev, I assume you're referring to the standard GSD3's?

I'd say it's these ones CJ.

They got very good results (better than the standard F1s) so I was hoping for good things.

Dem are um! have a receipt for 2 of them from July last year, and I reckon I've done about 10k km on them. (replaced the back 2 a few weeks later). Think I'll go back to the 'tried and trusted' for my next set...

The new Goodyear Eagle Asymetrics have had very good reviews anywhere I've seen them mentioned.

They are a high performance tyre so they're gonna be fairly soft.
Kev when you say you got bad wear what are you comparing them to?
What was your last set of tyres? How did you find the grip, handling balance on the goodyears?

Tbh I expected more than 10k km for the wear I have on €185 tyres!

Last set were Federals, first set I had on the 17s, and to be honest grip wasn't great, wear was ok until tyres went out of shape and started giving vibration at dual carriageway speeds. Got what I paid for in that instance.

Couldn't fault the Goodyear asymmetrics on grip & handling, no problems from that point of view.
