Throttle body?

Postby sconson » Mon Dec 01, 2008 11:11 am

Lads.

Is it a big deal to replace the throttle body?
Theres an FTO going for sale but he needs to replace that part. So he says anyway. The car is miss firing when cold but as soon as it heats up it runs perfectly. Its a tip gpx.

Cheers.

Nah not a big deal... as it happens I have one for a gpx sitting about that I was going to modify..

It's not really that common that they fail though - did the seller tell you why he thinks the throttlebody has failed?

Dont think throttle body is the prob here. Unless it is a case the car is not misfiring but just erratic when cold. Sounds like the STEPPER MOTOR to me.

Just got off the phone to him there. He said its only when started from cold and it just miss fires for about 30 seconds but once engine is heated up it clears it right up and drives perfectly. Planning on buying this car in the morning so just need to know if its anything serious. Hopefully not. Smashing car otherwise tho.

If you're uncertain, I would have a mechanic look at the car before you commit to a purchase. The TB isn't the problem here, its more likely to be the stepper motor (easy to fix) or somthing similar. Whats your definition of misfiring - whet sort of behavior occurs for the fisrt 30 second?

Sounds like the stepper alright... but as already pointed out - it could be worth your while bringing a mechanically minded friend...

Cheers lads

Im actually meeting him at his mechanics in the morning thats where the car is. Ill know more in the morning. The impression Im getting is that for the first 30 seconds or so when cold it splurts and konks out but as I said once engine is heated up runs perfectly. I gave it a good test drive last week and runs really smoothly in auto and using tip. Gears very responsive etc. How much are we talking to replace the stepper motor?

I would recommend getting a mechanic you are familiar with to look at it not a mechanic recommmended by the seller. Just the suspicious guy in me I guess.

http://www.freefantasyf1.co.uk/pics/grtest.htm

that's for the non mivec model (steelroe posted it in the knowledgebase forum) , stepper is under the throttle body just to make an idea.
really easy to remove and change

i really hate people that advertise stuff that's not there .

hope you get a nice cut in price for that and the NCT is valid!

Yeah I was but just thought in the end it would take a good bit of work and not to mention money to get the way that I would be happy with it. I know its a manual mivec aswell but just think it would only cause me some trouble down the line. He should have no problem in shifting it on.. Would be a great project car..

Well I have to say it looks well in the photos, and even though its not exactly as advertised, for roughly 2 and half, seems like not a bad deal to me, and you'd have a bit of money left to put into it.
I'd try pushing him a bit harder on the price though.
