Timing belt

Postby zacob » Thu Jan 27, 2005 5:25 pm

Getting timing belt changed next week. Mechanic told me he's done aplenty of Jap cars including FTO's. He said that when changing timing belt you would need to also change water pump and (tapets?). He knew about the tensioner ect. Was wondering if water needed to be changed?
Also said the timing belt was the same as a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant . Does anyone know if this is true.

Not sure if the timing belt is the same, but maybe get a second opinion. I got screwed by a mech who "knew the FTO" here in SA, maybe they aren't like that there?

I never changed the water pump or tapets, I think only if you have noisy tapets then change them, otherwise leave em alone.

All sounds a bit iffy to me. I cannot see any reason to replace a water pump unless it's broken. Possibly the water pump is prone to failure and this is a preventative measure....new one on me though if that is the case!
Tapets are a major undertaking. Currently available from camskill at ~€309 for 12. Required amount is 24, thats €618 + postage.
Then theres the labour. Usually an oil change will suppress tappet noise Unless your tappets are extremely bad and the noise does not die down after the engine heats up, I would not bother having them replaced.
The timing belts on the mivec and non-mivec V6 engines are different from one another. "2000 galant" is he referring to the 4cyl 2L, or the V6 2.5L....in any case I would have my doubts. Maybe somebody with CAPS can confirm?

Yeah, sounds strange to me too. Paul Nolan replaced my timing belt last year and never mentioned anything like that (and he definitely knows his FTO's), he did change the other two belts at the same time, but that was no big deal.
Unless your guy has had a good look at yours and just reckons the water pump's knackered for some reason - but I reckon you'd definitly know if your tappets needed to be done yourself.

Me thinks someone is trying to pull a fast one. Water pump need only be changed if giving trouble. And as for the tappets why the hell would you change them if they are not noisy. What model do you have, if it's a GPX then the tappets are adjustable and if he knows the FTO like he says then he should know this.

As regards the belt it is the same as a V6 galant, lret me know which model you have and I will send you the Gates part number for the belt you need.,

It was the 2000 V6 Galant.

I have a GR tip (non-mivec).

He was recommended to me by a friend. He hasn't looked at the car, said water pumps were always changed out with the timing belt on the FTO, which he claims to have done quite a few?

Thanks for the feedback, think I'll look somewhere else.

P.S I'm living in Cork if anyone has any recommendations!!

Put simply, he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. If theres a leak from the water pump then change it, if not, leave it alone.
