Clutch or gearbox?

Postby iwannafto » Tue Nov 07, 2006 2:53 pm

I'm having a problem engaging the car into gear after its been left idle for a while e.g. in the morning when I start, I can't engage any gear - if I wait for about 30 seconds or so then it appears to be ok. Also, if I'm travelling at speed for any extended amount of time in say 5th gear and when I try to drop through the gears, I can't do so immediately, the clutch appears very soft and I have to wait about 30 seconds or so until I can actually shift into another gear?? Any help with this would be appreciated.

I'm no mechanic but that sounds like a clutch cylinder issue to me..

None that I have noticed? Is this any problem that any mechanic could resolve do you think?

Yeah - I believe the clutch system on the FTO is fairly standard.. Now be aware that some mechanics will look at the car and thing "uh oh this guy is loaded, better rip him off".. so if you're in the Dublin Area try calling Paul Nolan..

Paul Nolan 086-2649884 Artane, Dublin

He's class - he'll tell you what's wrong - and he'll charge you a fair price.

He might be busy, but it's definately worth giving him a call.. My diagnosis could be way off..

I agree with Maud sounds like a clutch issue. The FTO uses a hydralic clutch, so pumping the pedal a few times will build up the pressure.Check the clutch fluid level. If low top up. Even if at max it may need to be replaced. The cheapest and simplest thing would be to replace the clutch fluid. This is a simple job and any mechanic could do it.
If you have a leak, it could be the master cylinder -expensive part IIRC

First things first - have the gearbox oil changed and see how it fares out.
