2L w2eekend fun....and now decisions....

Postby adrian » Sun Nov 09, 2003 8:21 pm

Hey lads and gals,

I drove a 1996 FTO at the weekend. I thought it was a GPX as the garage lad told me it was a MIVEC engine. I was wicked quick (compared to my GS).
I took a photo of the engine and when I got home I checked the web and it turned out it was a GR (oil cap on the right and no plastic cover). I dont think the garage lad even knows he's got it wrong. It's in North ROad motors in Finglas.

He says that he'd need 2000 Euro along with my own 1995 GS TIP....is this good value? There's about 85000 KM on the 1996 one. Maybe he'll knock some off it when he hears it's not a MIVEC.

I know one thing....I want a 2L FTO now, I love my GS loads but the 2L is the Dogs bo***s!! Would I be better waiting for a GPX or should I start now to consider the GRsss....it did seem wicked fast!

If its a manual, then yes, if not, then hang about for a manual GPX,
depends on your gearbox preference I suppose. What price are they looking for it?

Welcome to the darkside ;)

I suppose it depends on what value you'd give you're GS. I'd say you're GS is worth at least 6,000 euro - so 8K for a 96 sounds ok as long as there is a full warranty.

I looked at a 1995 GR there and although it was a clean body work it was a bit dodgy as when I test drive it I shut it off and it took ages to restart.

But you are right about the 2.0......... I love mine and can't wait to get back to it! Although I'd give it all up of someone woul d pay for me to ski all year

It's a TIPtronic GR 1996.
You reckon that 8K is good for that then?

Hi,

I called the dealer and told him that it's not a MIVEC he's selling. He said he didn;'t know that but it does not change the price.
So, bottom line -

My 1995 GS TIP (134,000 KM) PLUS 2000 EURO
=
1996 TIP GR with 86000 KM and a 3 MONTH WARRANTY.

Is this good depending on a mechanic checking out the GR for me??? Or should I hold out for a manual and maybe even a GPX.....

Thanks as always lads,

Adrian

Privately, you'd expect to pay 7-7.5k for a 3.5-4 grade GR, if you can get a 6 month warrenty, then its not bad value for money. Make sure to swap any toys out of your GS though. Also, get them to do a full service and look for some proof that the cambelt has been changed recently, if not get them to do that as well under the same terms.
