Oil Filter Tool

Postby Muad_dib77 » Sun Sep 27, 2009 12:04 pm

Hi Lads,

In Anticipation of getting my long lost P&J back I've gone an ordered a New oil filter and a bucket of Amsol of Oilman. I must admit I was a bit surprised that there was no Oilfiler tools, or even spark plug tools for sale on the Opie site... but anyways..

In your experience wheredo I get myself the best oilfilter tool? Last I checked helfrauds the had those belt yokes with the loop you get around the filter, then you tihgten and twist...I've heard many bad thingsabout those.. so i'd be less inclined to get oneof them..
I've also heard that youcould just stab a screwdrive through your old filter and the twist it out like that..Seems a tad agressive if you ask me..and what if your replacement filter doesn't fit?? then your left with no filter on your car..

Any thoughts/Experiences - places I can pick one up - would be greatly appreciated.

9 times out of ten you will losen the oil filter by hand maud,,,,,,,,ive done this on most cars as long as you have access to filter with both hands, i recently done mine but found it esay when car was hot/warm, got my 2 hands around it and wearing marigold gloves she unscrewed off simple and same as when putting on new filter, lick of oil on rim and fill it a wee bit and hand tighten only. try it out before using screw driver or buying tools.....you'd be surprised,

Get the oil filter tool with a chain and 1/4" drive connection, I find the loop type useless. As per KS, its easier to remove when warm and can often be screwed off by hand. Sticking a screwdriver through the filletr is not recommended, you run the risk of shards of filter metal ending up in the mix i.e v. bad for engine. In exteme cases, I've used this mehod where no other option was available, as I said, its not recommended as your first port of call. The filter on the FTO is easier to get at than on some of the other cars I've owned, leave the screwdriver in the box.

I've gone through a fair few of these over the years.

First one I got was like this one:

Gripped well and easy to use but the strap broke as it's only held together by a single rivet.

Next I got this all metal jobbie.

2 problems with this type; very hard to work a filter off with tight access as you have to screw and unscrew so much. also the band doesn't grip the filter very well, especially if oil has spilt on it.

When I had Fiats and Alfas, I used to use one of these.

I assume there are ones that will fit the FTO filter. these are foolproof, but you need different sizes for different filters, so not very economical.

Nowadays I just use a filter pliers like this

Best all rounder I think.

I use the one that Colm specified above for the Fiats, there is a kit you can get that has all different sizes to fit all filters, works wonders, no risk of rounding or anything, great job.
