FTO Detailing

Got around to detailing Bernard's FTO at the weekend, couple of pics below, the rest can be found on;

Nice job, full or partial detail? Do you favour any particular compounds in terms of the final finish?

Full exterior detail CJ, there were still a few deeper scratches that were below the laquer so they couldn't be taken out safely. Plus some of the paint readings were a bit on the thin side so it was safer not to use too harsh a compound or take too much off the top coat. The majority of the readings read around the 200-300 micron mark, but there were places were we came across 70-80, and thats danger territory.
For refining we used the Ultrafina from 3M with the refining pad, and finished it off then with a coat of Hi-Def wax from Autoglym, (after another wash and dry to get rid off any dust). The Ultrafina finishes it off nicely by getting out any buffer trails or minor holographing that might have happened with the harsher pads.

The results with this stuff are impressive, its very pricy for the size of the container but I've yet to see a readily available wax provide similar results.

Lads, I'd say there scope for you to go on the road from time to time, I reckon you could arrange to blitz a small number of cars in one day, I'm sure people would travel if the location was reasonably near.

The hi-def is pricey but its a very economical purchase. The amount you use out of a tin of it is minute for a car, in reality you need very little wax, one rub of hi-def on an applicator pad will see you do half a bonnet, or probably close to a full panel. I used be guilty of using too much polish when doing my one with Autogylm SRP, but this stuff is seriously long lasting and one of the best out there. There are much more expensive waxes out there, special carnuba extracts and such, but to be honest the hi-def is perfect. One tin will see you through many weekends of cleaning.
For a full external detail at the moment it takes the 2 of us 2 full days, (19 hours each at Bernard's car), theres a lot in it with reading the paint, assessing pads and polishes, taping off, refining, and not to mention all the prep work and then the final dressing. If it was just a stage one detail, then there is a chance that 2 cars could be covered in a day, but when you look closer at a car you realise that a stage 2 will be needed to get rid of most of the deeper swirl marks or light surface scratches.

The Zeds featuring in a short film in Limerick this weekend as a hitmans car - if ye're available Sat and/or Sunday (early) morning then I'd love to have the Zed looking spick & span for the shoot. Might be a good promo opportunity as well.

Can probably fit in friday afternoon or evening as well though if needed. Which might be a good option to make sure its fully covered.

Exterior is really all thats needed (apart from a quick rub inside). I'll call you guys tomorrow.
I'd say just a few hours on Saturday should sort it.
