Painting inlet manifold and rocker cover

Postby soc » Fri Mar 26, 2004 11:58 am

Heya,

Someone posted on UK FTOOC forums about painting the inlet manifold and rocker cover. Check out the link for a picture:
http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=8874

I am seriously considering doing mine (and maybe the calipers while I'm there) - I can just see the silver manifold, silver rocker cover with wine lettering (to go with car colour) and maybe even some silver calipers.

Anyone know what kind of paints I should be using - I could just ask at a motor factors but I'd prefer to be armed with some knowledge before getting the run around :-)

Cheers
Shane

Just watch that you use a decent very high temp paint becasuse if not it will burn and peel off.I had mine cerma coated which is basically a heat a coating which keeps the heat in which makes the engine bay cooler--good for your aftermarket filter. It looks quite like a dark chrome and is just a wipe clean and doesnt burn off with age...Alternatively take the manifold off and have it polished, this is by far the best looking option but is allot of work..

Just use smooth Hammerite on the calipers, it works well and its cheap.
You'll want some sort of high temp polycarbonate paint for the manifold.
Factors sell paint branded 'VHT' (Very High Temp) that can be used on exhaust sections and the like, the colour range may be limited though.

Do you think I could polish it myself if I got the right attachment for my drill - what time of material would I need to use for the polishing.

Painting just seems so much easier...... cerma coated you say... what's that and where can I get it?

Dunno about this but In reckon you'd have a hard time getting a good finish with a brush attachment on a drill.

Its a ceramic coating that can withstand seriously high temperatures, I don't know of anyone in the country who carries out this work mind you.

Yeah its a ceramic coating, Marc at The Garage sent mine away to get done along with Aarons new manifold, his was done white though. Most people start off with a drill attachment and once the main crap is off then go to some wet and dry paper, start off with about 800 grit and work your way up to about 1400 or 1600, then finish off with a metal polish and a cloth.Just takes some time and a bit of effort but thats what these cars are all about.
