Mivec Spark plug tool

Postby karlf » Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:26 pm

Anybody got a lend of one of these for a few hours? I was doing a service on the car today, completely forgot about needing a "special" socket so couldn't change them. (this was after I went through the hassle of taking off the manifold etc) :smt088. Failing getting a lend of one, anyone know were I can get one local? I seen them on FTOOC but dont want to wait a few days for it to arrive. Any help would be appreaciated.

That would be great Colm, cheers. Where/when could I collect it from you?
I still would like to get one for when my next service comes around. Is the FTOOC the only place you can get them?
Someone did suggest trimming the edges off a normal socket with a grinder, but I thought that was a bit extreme.

They're also part of the standard toolkit that comes with the car, I'm sure Steelroe would have one or two lying around.

Just get a 16mm plug socket 3/8" drive socket and it will do the trick. The tool kit ones are crap and often round on the plug. The plugs can be very tight if not changd in a while

I've tried a few socket sets, my sis's fellas 3 sets and keith from on here tried with his there this evening and no joy. The sockets wont fit down the shaft where the plug sits. I am going to order one off camskill as well as some decent long life spark plugs. (or might just get crap ones that have to be changed regularly to make buying the tool worth while) :D

As per Rory, you need a 3/8" drive to fit down the barrel. I made sh!te of a Mitsi plug tool the last time I changed the plugs, they're not particularly durable.

The one I used was a 3/8" socket set and it didn't work. My sis's fella's is a 3/8" and 1/2" Teng tools set and neither worked. Think I'll just order the one from camskill and be done with it, at least I'll know it will definately fit. Might get the manifold gaskets while I'm at it, seen as I'll have them all off anyway.

I eventually got one to fit. We grinded down the side walls of a socket so it was skinny enough to fit down the shat. Its a bit of a late update but I just came across the tool in my car yesterday and I thought I'd offer it to anyone who'd like to borrow it to do their own. It fits a 1/2" rachet set so should anyone need to borrow it let me know.
