My Second Car Idea

Postby RussMan » Wed Sep 12, 2007 10:22 am

Ok so i'm going to fix up my fto and move it on in the next couple of weeks so the predicament i'm in is that i can't warrant starting a completely new policy for my second car and building up my no claims all over again.

I'm thinking of buying a classic porsche 944 as i believe it will be more economical than either a) keeping the fto or b) buying some sort of saloon whether bmw 320 / 520 and coughing up the dough for insurance and tax.

Has anyone any experience with buying classical insurance vehicles with respect to Tax and Insurance. My understanding is the car needs to be at least 20 years old and i am only able to cover a limited number of miles, have another separate insurance policy on my day to day car.

Is there a set insurance price for this and is this road tax set also?

Thanks in advance,

Russ

Irish Vintage Society offer 3rd party insurance on cars over 20 years old from €150 to €250 depending on mileage.

Also First Ireland are meant to be very good.

If you are going to run a second car then I presume you are going to run it as a weekend/occasional car. If so then you'll likely get more use out of the 944 than a BMW 320 etc. Realistically you're not going to get out of the Zed and drive a BMW 320/520 for the weekend and the car will sit idle just depreciating.

Personnally having driven the 944 - I think you'll be a little dissapointed with it as well. Your FTO would leave it for dead.

If it was my decision I'd be more inclined to buy as good a condition Peugeot 205 1.9GTI as I could get my hands on - they're rather good old fashioned fun and would be very reasonable to run as well as providing you with depreciation free motoring.

Otherwise how about getting one of the predecessors of your current Zed - maybe a 240Z or even up to a 280ZX like this one - http://www.usedcars.ie/usedcars/index.c ... N=41929066

Car has to be 30 years old to qualify for classic status regarding tax i.e. motor and VRT. Most insurers offering classic policies require the car to be 20 years old -those rates on the link above look very good. As per myfeckinFTO, an 80's hotch would be a good choice, golf GTi etc....

What's your budget?

Personally I'd love this '73 BMW CSA 3.0 auto for €12,000

All good ideas thanks....
Think i'll leave the 205 GTI back in the 80/90's ... i've past it although it used to be all i ever wanted, i remember being afraid of how fast they were.
I think the 330cs looks nice and i'll be looking into getting a test drive.

I've got 635csi's, porsche 928's and 944's in my head... Merc SL500's
When you look the world is really your oyster, Bentley's you name it!

I you see anything nice let me know please, going to get the fto shifted soon.. fingers need to be removed from butt

All the above cars will be expensive to run and insure. In fact it would likely be considerably cheaper to hold onto the FTO.
Have you thought about maybe putting the money into the Zed instead? - Nismo kit and rims and maybe even a turbo conversion would still cost you less than the above and you wouldn't have associated running costs.

i don't think Russ wants to keep the Zed as his sole car cos of the little family!!

I personally wouldn't consider running a classic car, just too much hassle in the long run!! If you need a second car for the family and don't want to spend big bucks get something reliable.....
