Auto folding mirrors..

Postby TopCat » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:48 am

Anyone ever spot this guide before? ...

Went at it at the weekend, and its such a neat little trick. Coming back to the car, beep beep, and mirrors fold out too, don't think it'll ever grow old. :D
For some reason though, mine only works when I open the car. i.e. they don't fold up when I lock the car. But to be honest, its actually grand that way, you can choose where the mirrors are folded when you park up.

Tom,

They should go up and down aswell if you use the key or press the lock inside. Must be something funny with your wiring.

Oh yeah? Crap, mine never did that. The only way they operated before was by using the switch. :(

Not as standard, I think Steelroe means when wired up to do it they should operate with the locks as part of the central locking.

Oh right. Yeah, mine (now) will fold down by the central locking, ie RCL, by key, or by the internal lock. I think they should fold up by the central locking, but mine don't. As i said, I'm happy enough with this setup though. :)

Just thinking, did you have an alarm fitted on the car when you had it?
I think the polish lad said he had one fitted, so maybe they messed with the mirror switch when fitting that. :?:

I had two alarms - And here they are!

Nah - never fitted an alarm and not just for weight saving either - you have seen where I live! Not one recorded case of a car ever having been broken into in my area - Its just too far for scumbags to travel to without taking the rotties into account.

I bought the relays during the week (by the way, 5-pin ones are more common, and work fine for the job) and wired them one evening in the house, half hour job really. Then fitted the system at the weekend, another half hour or a little more. The central locking wires are a little more difficult to get at than you might imagine looking at the photos (its just a bit tricky connecting the wires), but other than than, there's nothing really hard about doing it.

Tom
What type of connectos did you use. Maybe one is not making contact properly.

Regardless if you have alarm or not it should work. You are wiring directly into the central locking control unit and the mirror control unit.

When you lock the car they close but they are not opening when you unlock, is this right.

Nope, the opposite way around. When I lock the car nothing happens. But, if I manually press the mirror button to close them, then lock the car, when I come back, the mirrors do work along with the central locking.

Can't remember the name of them, but I used those connector where you push the two wires into a small metal plate, and a plastic clip holds them in place. I removed a bit of the plastic on the wire before hand too to get a good connection.

Wait, here is a pic of the connector, "Snap-Lock Automotive Cable Connectors" according to Maplin. :)

You deffo have a problem with wire contact or you used the wrong wire for the closing. Give all the connector a good squeeze again with a pliers. You are 99% there. Those connectors can be a female dog sometimes.

Thanks Rory.
I did bare the wires to try and get a better contact, but I'll give them a check again to make sure. When you point out the fact that it is a direct connection between the CL and the mirror switch, there's no reason it shouldn't work.
Oh, quick question. For the connection to the mirror switch, you pull off a tab that reveals a load of pins, 2 of which you connect into. Its almost as if they are there for easy modding. Anyone know what their purpose is or what the rest of them do?
